SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Valley of El Palmar, in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte, in Tenerife, will host from November 16 to 19 the second edition of the National Meeting of Nature and Rural World Literature, Green Letters, an event in which the latest developments in this area at the state level.
This meeting was presented today, Friday, by the island councilor for Natural Environment Management and Security, Isabel García, accompanied by the mayor of Buenavista del Norte, Antonio González; the president of the Isla Baja Consortium, José Gregorio Pérez, and the director of the Meeting, Juanjo Ramos.
Fifteen speakers will participate in this national meeting through book presentations, talks, conservatories and workshops in which the rural world will be the protagonist. Among the speakers will be Arturo Valledor, Carlos de Hita, Ander Izagirre or Virginia Mendoza. They will be joined by Antonio Sandoval, Carlos Lozano, Nicolás Ruiz de la Corte, Antonio Aguilera, Francesc Kischner (Oryx bookstore), Javier Martín Carbajal, Fran Torrents and Cayetano Cordovés.
The counselor indicated that for nature lovers “this appointment becomes essential because it transcends another meeting of biodiversity or geological studies, sustainability and climate change, and also other cultural events related to books or theatrical performances” , and added that the mixture “becomes a kind of treasure in which art and care for the environment go hand in hand and offer possibilities charged with emotion”.
“The most prominent names on the national scene on the interpretation through literature and illustration of the rural world and nature will meet on the island with the intention of, from the territory itself, showing and sharing aspects of their work, proposals and visions to establish in a kind of review of environmental management”, said Isabel García.
The mayor of Buenavista del Norte, Antonio González Fortes, stated that beyond Letras Verdes “it seems crazy, it is a wonderful and original idea.” For us, as a municipality, it is a real pride to be part of this meeting and to believe in it. We are convinced that this is the way to show that culture can be created from corners like this, from the small towns of Tenerife and also in a respectful and sustainable way,” he added.
José Gregorio Pérez Medina, president of the Isla Baja Consortium, thanked the close collaboration with the island entity so that “we have the opportunity to carry out these wonderful follies”, referring to Letras Verdes. In addition, he extended his thanks to the Vice-Ministry of Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands and its Vice-Minister, Juan Márquez, for the creation of the Pueblos Creativos program, to which the Isla Baja Consortium has joined and in which Letras Verdes participates.
For his part, Juan José Ramos, director of the national meeting, declared that Letras Verdes is a reason to meet writers with whom it is sometimes difficult to coincide, but also “it is an opportunity to continue discovering magical corners such as the region of Teno-Isla Baja”.
In addition, Ramos emphasized the small area that Letras Verdes will have in Los Silos, a neighboring municipality. Another novelty of this second edition is the activities for schoolchildren, who will have the opportunity to share the experience of Virginia Mendoza and Ander Izagirre. “We want the Isla Baja to be impregnated with literature on nature and the rural world these days,” she said. To this he added the different locations from which the different participants will come: “Teruel, Seville, Cádiz, Málaga, the Basque Country or Gran Canaria. We have tried to bring together a diverse group of nature writers in the El Palmar Valley,” he concluded. .
In this second edition of the meeting, Arturo Valledor will be recognized with the Letras Verdes award for his outreach work on nature. The delivery of the recognition will be next Wednesday, November 16 at 6:00 p.m. in the municipal library of Buenavista del Norte. Half an hour later, Valledor will give the talk ‘Latest developments in dodology’ which will be moderated by the environmentalist Juan José Ramos.
On the other hand, the second edition of Letras Verdes will be a premiere edition. The nature sound engineer Carlos de Hita will present for the first time the book ‘Sounds of the world. Travel by hearsay’ (Anaya Touring). It is a compilation of some thirty trips made by De Hita in which he has collected the most characteristic sounds of each of these enclaves. It should be noted that this book includes a chapter dedicated to the volcanic eruption of La Palma in 2021.
Ander Izagirre will also be in Green Letters. The recently awarded with the Kapuscinski for Journalism in the category of literary reporting for his book ‘Potosí’ will once again meet the public of Letras Verdes. The journalist from San Sebastian will have several interventions throughout this second edition.
Another of the proper names of the second edition will be that of Virginia Mendoza. Journalist and social and cultural anthropologist, most of her work has to do with the concept of home, its loss and the transgenerational trauma that this causes. She writes about roots, uprooting, resistance, identity, memory, exile, genocide and minorities. In Green Letters she will be talking about two of her books: ‘They will stop my river’ and ‘Who will close your eyes’.
It should be remembered that Letras Verdes will have a solidarity entry of one euro in some of its activities. The entire collection will go to the NGO Correcaminos Solidarios Tenerife and its project ‘A school for Gambia: Fass Chamen School’.
Although the bulk of the programming for the second edition of Letras Verdes will be held from November 16 to 19, there will be previous activities on November 12, 14 and 15 that will serve as a prelude.
Letras Verdes is funded by the Pueblo Creativos program of the Canarian Institute for Cultural Development (Government of the Canary Islands), the Natural Environment Management and Security area of the Tenerife Island Council, Tenerife Tourism and the Buenavista del Norte City Council. In addition, it has the collaboration of the Isla Baja Consortium and the organization and production of Birding Canarias and its publishing label Bicho Malo Libros.
