The costaleros of Carmen de La Isleta have twinned with their counterparts from Puerto de la Cruz. A large representation of faithful to the patron saint of sailors moved from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Tenerife last Monday with the purpose of sealing this agreement with the organization that takes the Puerto Rican image in procession every year. Secondly, the City Council of Puerto de la Cruz took the opportunity to also recognize them.
The twinning agreement became a reality inside the church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia, mother church of Puerto de la Cruz. An occasion that the costaleros took advantage of to honor the sculpture present in the temple, which in this case dates from 1954 and is the work of the sculptor Ángel Acosta Martín from Porto.
The porters of Carmen de La Isleta received the Roque Nublo Social in 2020 for his social work in the port neighborhood. At the beginning of this year the association of SMEs of the Puerto Canteras shopping area proposed the costaleros for recognition as the 2022 Canary Islands Award in the category of Popular Culture. Recognition they did not get.
On the other hand, the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria made its favorite son in 2022 the one who was its president for several years, Joseph Falcon. The costaleros already received the city’s Gold Medal in 2008.
