The Council of Tenerifethrough the Mobility area, has awarded the drafting of the project for new lanes for high occupancy vehicles and public transport (BUS-VAO) that will help speed up traffic on the TF-5, in both directions, between Santa Cruz Y The lagoon.
These lanes will be characterized by having intelligent transport systems (ITS) that, by means of light beacons, will limit access to the lanes exclusively to private vehicles with high occupancy (two or more people inside) and to public transport.
The First Vice President and Minister of Mobility, Enrique Arriaga, explains in a note that these Bus-HOV lanes “will have more than fifteen kilometers and will take advantage of one of the four available lanes going up and one of the three going downin both cases those located furthest to the left, limiting access to other vehicles through luminous ITS elements”.
Arriaga adds that this initiative arises because “it is essential to improve the circulation of public transport between Santa Cruz and La Laguna, and for this it is necessary to prevent the buses from being affected by the intense traffic that exists in rush hours in both directions.”
In addition, he states that “it is necessary to reward people who share vehicles and, therefore, they will also be able to use these lanes.”
For his part, the island director of Mobility, José Alberto León, clarifies that the system consists of “creating an area of red and green lights that will only allow the passage of certain vehicles to the ITS lane at times of retention.”
He assures that the objective is to promote the use of public transport or car sharing because “today 80% of cars have a single driver”.
The awarded company, Tekia Ingenieros SA, will have a period of 12 months to present the project and will have a budget of 148,389 euros for its drafting.
