A job “well done”, which provides “quality and professionalism to the industrial sector in the Archipelago”. This is how the president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, described the work carried out at the Coca-Cola plant in the municipality of Tacoronte, which he visited yesterday for the first time on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.

Torres toured the facilities accompanied by the general director of Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) Iberia, Francesc Cosano, and the mayor of the municipality, José Daniel Díaz, in addition to other positions and representatives of the company.

“We have seen that it is a leading industry, that it has been able to modernize and maintain its activity, even in times as difficult as those of the pandemic, with active workers to be able to supply its products to the Canary Islands as an essential company,” he declared. President.

He also stressed that “there are many families, not only from Tacoronte, but from Tenerife, who have had their livelihood here and have given us sustenance through a quality product such as Coca Cola.”

Although this factory celebrates a quarter of a century of existence this year, the presence of Coca-Cola in the Canary Islands dates back to 1955. Almost 70 years of history in which there has been a special relationship with the Islands. In fact, it was Canarian families that promoted the presence of Coca-Cola in the Canary Islands. Since then, it has been growing both in size and volume of beverages manufactured.

“Coca-Cola has an already important track record in the Archipelago. In almost 70 years we have managed to establish a close relationship with its people, of which we can only feel satisfied. We work every day to make our activity a model of sustainable development so that, together, we can contribute to the progress of the islands and their inhabitants”, Cosano stressed.

The current factory has a total area of 53,600 square meters, of which 32,000 correspond to the built area. It also has a spring, Kristal well, which supplies it.

120 employees work at the Tenerife plant and it produces more than 90 million liters annually. Five production lines (one for glass, one for cans, one for PET plastic, one for bag-in-box and one for premix) pack 19 brands and 15 different formats. As a relevant fact, it should be noted that the Krystal water brand is exclusively bottled there in PET (plastic) format.

In addition, the factory has two conventional warehouses with a capacity for 12,000 pallets, a daily loading capacity of 50 trucks and 30 unloading trucks per day.

From Tacoronte and from its six commercial delegations, Coca-Cola distributes its products to 15,000 establishments of all channels, in which it sold 138 million liters of product in 2021.

In addition to launching projects that help improve its operations, sustainability is another of the plant’s pillars. Coca-Cola has set a goal of carbon neutrality in 2040, with an intermediate step of reducing emissions by 30% throughout its value chain by 2030.

To do this, it works in five areas: ingredients, packaging, operations and factories, transport and refrigeration equipment. The Tenerife plant has reduced its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 7% since 2019. It also recovers 99.23% of its waste.

In terms of water, it is also a pioneer. Once the wastewater from the plant has been treated, it is discharged to the Valle de Guerra treatment plant. In it, thanks to an electrodialysis process, it is possible to reduce the salt content of the water so that it can be reused in the irrigation of crops in the area.
