The workers, against the privatization of the Punta Larga school canteen

The workers of the school canteen of the Center for Infant and Primary Education (CEIP) Punta Larga demanded the improvement of the quality and the increase in the quantity of food that serve the 375 beneficiary students. They did so with a concentration in front of the headquarters of the Department of Education of the Canary Islands Governmentin which they also showed their rejection of the privatization of the service that is planned to be applied as of January, as they publicly denounced.

With twelve workers assigned to the council, several of them with 19 years of seniority out of the 24 that the service has been active, they show their solidarity with the mothers of students who demand a better quality meal, because “the catering has deteriorated since the pandemic becoming scarce food, as several mothers have said, “according to several of the employees who gathered yesterday.

From mid-2021, fathers and mothers of students oppose the privatization of the management of the school canteen. They argue that it decreases the quality of the food and makes the service more expensive. The measure was agreed by the School Board at its meeting on April 29 last year. Decision that coincides with the approval, by the Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, of a new dining room with kitchen, a work that is under construction.

The school canteen workers are critical of the school management, denying the existence of problems linked to the group of workers and denouncing that “the privatization of the canteen entails an increase in family fees, with the aggravating circumstance that they want be the same company that manages the current catering».

The group of dining room employees who gathered yesterday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Education made it clear that “we are not defending our jobs, because in any case they would transfer us to another center. It would hurt us, but that’s not the point now. Let it be clear that we are protesting to reject the privatization of the Punta Larga canteen service.”

For this, the workers of the school canteen of this school in Candelaria announce that the concentrations before the Education headquarters in Santa Cruz will be repeated every Tuesday of this month, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
