The island of El Hierro will be the headquarters of the World Biological Corridor of the Oceans, as announced this Thursday afternoon in an act to commemorate the ‘International Day of Biosphere Reserves’.
This international office will be installed in the Sustainability Park of Las Cancelitas, advanced the president of the International Committee of the World Biological Committee, Jorge Extramiana, and the president of the Cabildo of El Hierro, Alpidio Armas.
Extramiana highlighted the work carried out by the island in recent years and the values of its marine environment, and Armas highlighted the importance of the island having figures such as the Biosphere Reserve, the World Geopark and now the World Ocean Biological Corridor –it has also been declared a World Biological Corridor for beaked whales–.
“These figures speak of the importance of the natural and cultural values of the island and present it abroad as an example of sustainability and coexistence between man and the environment,” he added.
On the other hand, the El Hierro Biosphere Reserve presented its international twinning project between schools that they are carrying out and the audiovisual work, with a dozen thematic videos in relation to traditional uses and activities of the island of El Hierro driven by the Participation body, collects a note from the Cabildo.
Throughout the day, different members of the Scientific Council and the Participation Body shared their points of view on the form of management that should be carried out in the El Hierro Biosphere Reserve.
Thus, the conservation of landscapes together with the preservation of traditions were the meeting point of all the opinions expressed during the time of debate.
