The new station to purify wastewater in the coastal area of San Miguel de Abona will start operating in January, as announced by the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, during his visit to the facility. The works, which have a budget of 2,190,416 euros, are financed 80% by the Cabildo and 20% by the San Miguel City Council.
As explained by Pedro Martín, “the main objective of the work is to solve the problem of water discharges into the sea in this part of the south of the island, where we were not only receiving complaints, but also sanctions from the European Union, for not treating wastewater properly. As of January of next year this matter will have been completely resolved and we will have taken another step in one of the great objectives of the Cabildo, which is to definitively resolve the discharge of sewage into the sea on our island”.
The insular president said that the investment that the Cabildo is making, of more than 2 million euros, “will see its benefits very soon.” “This is the path on which we are going to continue throughout the island,” added Martín, who explained that with this WWTP and with the Golf del Sur WWTP, the waters of the entire San Miguel coast are legalized from the TF-1 to the sea
The Island Councilor for Municipal Cooperation and Housing of the Cabildo, Zebenzuí Chinea; the mayor of San Miguel de Abona, Arturo González, and the first deputy mayor, Lot García, also attended the visit to the facilities.
The mayor of San Miguel de Abona highlighted “the municipal commitment to continue improving this type of wastewater sanitation infrastructure and values the island’s involvement and cooperation to achieve this goal”.
For González, “given the tourist and residential potential of the lower area of San Miguel, this was a fundamental issue to be resolved.” “The works are progressing at a good pace, we are happy because we are going to meet the scheduled deadlines and with the commitment made with our neighbors so that the coastal area would have this service guaranteed in optimal conditions,” he stressed.
For his part, the Minister of Municipal Cooperation and Housing, Zebenzuí Chinea, expressed satisfaction “for the work carried out by the company, for the cooperation and joint work with the city council, and because we are carrying out an important project within the Cooperation program Municipal and Housing 2018-2021 to solve the wastewater problem that had been suffered in the area for years “.
“A modern and efficient installation, which will benefit the residents of the municipality and the environment,” added Chinea, who pointed out that the Cabildo is going “to continue investing in the municipalities in this matter, which, although it is not very visible It is very important for the island and for the citizens”.
