The PP of the Canary Islands has called on the regional government on Tuesday to address electronic commerce and tax-free on the islands “urgently”.
In a statement, the popular have explained that they have requested this after a meeting that took place between their general secretary, Poli Suárez, the spokesman for the Popular Group in the Regional Parliament’s Economy Commission, Fernando Enseñat; and the regional deputy secretary for Sectoral Action of the PP, Manuel Fernández, with leaders of the Tenerife Chamber of Commerce.
In this way, the PP claimed the importance of addressing these issues “with agility, efficiency and rigor”, since “on this, the competitiveness of the Canarian productive fabric in the field of international trade may depend”.
Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce made it clear that “from our perspective, as electronic commerce is currently proposed, the Canarian consumer is at a disadvantage compared to any other citizen of the country and our business suffers from unfair competition, due to a lack regulations that protect both companies and consumers in the Canary Islands”.
Regarding the application of ‘tax-free’, both parties agreed that “the model that is to be implemented in the Canary Islands does not currently exist in any leading tourist destination”.
Even, from the PP they point out that “it is not applied in national destinations such as the Balearic Islands or Catalonia”, since it is “a system that is not very agile, inefficient, and its application in the Canary Islands would damage the good image that our islands have as a tourist destination in the international arena”.
“We claim that the money that tourists from non-EU countries pay more for the collection of the IGIC be returned immediately, since this benefits the image of the Canary Islands as a tourist destination,” said Suárez.
In fact, he explained that representatives of all the business and commercial groups of the Islands have shown themselves against the system that the Government of the Canary Islands intends to implement because “they act with their backs on our productive fabric, which are the ones who best know how the commercial activity, and that require the implementation of an agile and effective return system, as in any leading tourist destination, and not the obsolete system that they intend to install in the Canary Islands”.
