The Abama Resort Tenerife was crowned champion of the second edition of the Canary Islands Trophy for Sailing Cruises after proclaiming himself the absolute winner of the 32nd Princess of Asturias Cruise Trophywhich ended yesterday in the waters of Las Palmas de Gran Canariaand from Infantas Trophy of Spainheld in the capital of Tenerife at the beginning of this month.
The event organized by the RC Náutico de Gran Canaria experienced a final day where the crews had to make the most of their strategies on the regatta field. The weak pressure of the northeasterly direction wind was close to compromising the normal development of the competition, although the race committee managed to save the day by getting the distance of the courses right.
With these conditions, Lucio Pérez Aranaz’s Abama Resort Tenerife managed to put a perfect finishing touch to his great season. The owner of the boat from the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife showed his satisfaction on reaching land: «We have achieved what we were looking for a month ago. The crew is very happy. The race committee carried out the planned program carrying out the four races in our group and it has been the perfect ending.
His most immediate opponent, Joaquín Blanco’s Butxaca, owner and skipper of RC Náutico de Gran Canaria, was unable to give in yesterday to the pressure of Andrés Monje’s Maeña 9, who overwhelmed him on the last day with two first places. But the greater regularity of Blanco’s boat allowed him to keep the lead in the general classification of the ORC class (4-5), where Jorge Salamanca’s Jícaro (CM Radazul) finished third.
In the ORC E class, the performance of Agustín Espinosa’s Lancelot was indisputable. Three first places in the three regattas that this class disputed endorse his good work. Agustín Espinosa’s Nona (CM Varadero) followed in the footsteps of the winner, scoring three second places, while third place on the podium this time went to Alejandro Martín’s Maio (RCNGC).
The awards ceremony for this 32nd edition of the Princess of Asturias Trophy was attended by the Colonel in charge of operations in the Tenerife air sector, Nicolás Ramírez Arregui; the captain of the ship and head of the military arsenal of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carlos Mújica; the commander of the Civil Guard Vicente Reig Basset; the head of the small boat dock at the Sports Pier in the capital of Gran Canaria, Dácil La Camera; and as representative of the Royal Canarian Sailing Federation, Francisco Olivares. These authorities were accompanied by Maica López Galán and Enrique Martínez, the presidents of the RC Náutico de Gran Canaria and the RC Náutico de Tenerife, respectively, in addition to the commodore of both entities, Juan Francisco Romay and Félix Galera.
Canary Islands Trophy Circuit
During the award ceremony, the participants received the good news of the creation of the Canarian Cruise Trophy Circuit, an event that from next year will bring together the Canary Islands Championship, the César Manrique Trophy, the Princess of Asturias Trophy, the Infantas de Spain and the Lustral Regatta. This decision was made after the last meeting of the Association of Yacht Clubs of the Canary Islands, held last Thursday in the capital of Gran Canaria and attended by representatives of entities from five islands: Gran Canaria, La Palma, Lanzarote, Tenerife and Fuerteventura.
