the mayor of Icod of the WinesFrancis González, announced yesterday that the City Council is considering filing the corresponding appeal with the Supreme Court to authorize the popular consultation on the type of sand to be used for recovery san marco beachafter the Council of Ministers has decided not to do so, considering that it is not a matter “of municipal competence itself”.
The president made these statements during a press conference in which he acknowledged that “this could happen” and considered that “there is still time to convince the institutions so that common sense prevails.”
Within this framework, González detailed all the steps taken in this project, among which he highlighted the request made to the Government of the Canary Islands to initiate an impact study on the contribution of natural sand. “I appeal to Mr. Valbuena’s common sense and that he give us a meeting after the letter I sent him,” he said.

He also emphasized the neighborhood survey that the Consistory carried out in August to find out what type of sand the neighbors wanted and in which 1,080 people of the 24,000 inhabitants of the city voted. Although he confessed that he would have liked a greater participation, in his opinion “it is significant” that 9 out of 10 people bet on natural sand and 4 out of 5 are willing to wait for recovery with this type of sand and not crushed sand.
