The plenary of City Hall of Santa Cruz will address tomorrow a motion of the PSOE in which a study on the security of the crosswalks of the city, and depending on the results, the implementation of measures to guarantee the safety of pedestrians.
The motion is presented by the socialist mayor Florentino Guzmán Plasencia and in the argument it is pointed out that “in our city we have identified a large number of pedestrian crossings in which the safety of the pedestrian is not guaranteed in the proximity of a vehicle. There are crossings in which parked vehicles or elements of public services limit or prevent the visibility of the pedestrian and the driver, pedestrian crossings with little signage and road markings with hardly any paint. We also found a significant amount of them with insufficient lighting, because the lights are far away or with some object that obscures the pedestrian crossing.
For this reason, it is proposed to improve the visibility of all pedestrian crossings by avoiding the presence of obstacles that impede the visibility of vehicles, sufficiently in advance so that they can identify the pedestrians accessing it, proceeding to relocate or eliminate them.
Likewise, it would be about improving the technical quality of horizontal signage, by applying high reflectance paints and installing additional lighting elements where deemed necessary. Lowering of sidewalks, sound devices for the blind or implanting a margin of visibility in the steps between car parks, complete the motion.
