The escape of a mouflon on a road in the Canary Islands

This Tuesday a viral video in which a mouflon was shown on a road in Tenerife. The presence of this sheep on the road reminds us of the danger that the presence of animals on the roads can pose for driving.

At 4:00 p.m., a mouflon got into the road and fled at high speed to the amazement of drivers and passers-by. “loosen the radar”, can be heard in a video recorded from a car that witnessed the events and that pulled humor to show that the animal was going at a speed greater than the maximum speed established for cars on that road.

Specifically it was in the area of La Hidalga, going up towards Arafo, on the island of Tenerife.

Finally the mouflon was intercepted and according to the Council of Tenerife It will be slaughtered according to the protocol of the Biodiversity area of the Council of Natural Management and Security of the Cabildo, as it is a species of exotic-invasive fauna.

“The mouflon or mouflon of Corsica is a small sheep, compared to its Asian relatives, which can have different shapes and sizes of horns. It is reddish brown with whitish tones on the snout.“, according to the Canarian fauna portal of the Ministry of Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands

“It was introduced on the island of Tenerife for hunting and hunting purposes, and later on La Palma, becoming a serious problem in terms of conservation of the endemic and threatened flora of both islands“, Add.

“It is native to Asia and was later introduced in many places, mainly in Corsica, Sardinia and Cyprus. The specimens from Spain came from Corsica, the first place where it was introduced was in the Cazorla National Reserve and from there it was followed by introductions in many other Spanish preserves”, he continues.

“In the Canary Islands, they are only found on the islands of Tenerife and La Palma. It is estimated that the population in Spain is 15,000 individuals“, nuances.
