Tenerife has 4,155,575 regular air seats for this winter, which is the highest figure in its history, with 300,000 more places than in the same season of 2018-2019when the previous maximum was reached.
The regular places last summer were also a record for the island, with a total of 5.1 million, 126,259 more than in 2019, reports the Cabildo de Tenerife in a statement.
Its president, Pedro Martín, values the work carried out by the Tenerife Tourism team at the Routes World fair, the most important routes fair in the world, held in Las Vegas.
In addition, he assures that although Tenerife already has a wide direct connection, with 110 routes in 25 markets, this fair has explored the possibility of connecting the island with new cities on the American continent and the Middle East.
In the professional meetings held within the framework of this fair, conversations have also been established with companies that already operate with Tenerife to improve connectivity with third destinations in the United States, Canada and the Middle East.
“This would mean that a passenger can travel to the island, from some points of origin with which Tenerife does not have a direct connection, with a minimum wait at a connecting airport and without the need to check their luggage twice,” says the president. of the Cabildo.
The island’s Director of Tourism, Laura Castro, emphasizes that this type of strategy, in which Tenerife is “working intensely”, will mean “a significant reduction” in waiting time at airports for travelers, who “on many occasions have to spend hours and even nights in the terminals to continue their trip to Tenerife”.
Laura Castro also advances that conversations have been held with Icelandair with the aim of increasing connections through the Reykjavík airport, where numerous travelers arrive from the United States or Canada.
“The goal is that the final destination of these travelers is Tenerife,” Castro stresses.
Similar conversations have been established with the Lisbon airport and the TAP Portugal airline, and the prospecting process has begun with different connection points in the Middle East, points out the island’s director of Tourism.
The CEO of Tenerife Tourism, David Pérez, details that during the World Routes fair, the island’s promotion body held fifteen meetings with airports and airlines to continue improving connectivity and the positioning of Tenerife.
These meetings will allow, in addition to improving connections with the island, to continue working on economic diversification, in the field of business and on the possibilities of increasing routes for the benefit of residents who wish to travel to destinations in the United States, Canada or Middle East.
Pérez assures that the analysis of data on the behavior of the markets with which Tenerife does not have a direct connection has been essential to implement this connectivity strategy through hubs or connection airports. However, there are cases such as Canada, with a number of passengers received in the middle of the year, 2,827, which already reached 75% of those who arrived in the same period of 2019, 3,744.
During Routes World 2022, the Tenerife Tourism delegation held meetings with airlines such as ITA, Eithad Airlines, Icelandair, Nordica-Estonia, Emirates Airlines, Qatar Airlines, Saudia Airlines, TAP Portugal, Vueling or Wizz, in addition to Binter, which was also present in Las Vegas.
Similarly, meetings were held with relevant international airports such as Boston Logan International Airport, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Polish Airports or Istanbul Airport.
In the latter, a parallel meeting was held with Turkish Airlines, the flag carrier of Turkey.
More than half of the 4.1 million seats for this winter will be offered abroad, with almost 2.3 million seats, which represents a growth compared to winter 19/20, of +24% (+443,380 seats) .
From the Peninsula, there will be almost a million seats (977,665 seats), which is 27% more than in 19/20 (+205,851 more seats).
Places are increased in the main markets of the island, such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy.
