The coastal promenade of the Marina de San Miguel comes into service

Costa San Miguel improves its resources and public infrastructures. With an investment of 988,517 euros, of which the Canary Islands Government contributed 901,801 and the Cabildo de Tenerife 86,716, yesterday the Paseo de La Marina de San Miguel was formally presented. It was done by the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Regional Executive, Yaiza Castilla; the president of the Island Corporation, Pedro Martín, and the mayor of Sanmiguelero, Arturo González. The delegation was completed by the first deputy mayor, Lot García, and the island’s director of Tourism, Laura Castro. This is the first phase of this project promoted by both public administrations with the aim of providing the area with a promenade that both residents and visitors can enjoy.

During the tour, Yaiza Castilla highlighted the impact that this type of action has on the quality of the destination and, consequently, on economic development. «If we want to maintain the competitive value of the Canary Islands as a tourist destination, we cannot fall into conformity, but remain alert and active, not only to maintain our position vis-à-vis other competing markets, especially those with more recent development, but also to increase and extend the benefits that this sector produces in our economy to other productive sectors”, said the counselor.

Within the framework of this reflection, Castilla maintained that it is “two objectives that necessarily go through promoting excellence and betting on increasing the quality levels of tourist public spaces”. This type of infrastructure is needed “not only to improve the tourist image of the Canary Islands, but also to optimize living conditions, both for the resident population and for visitors,” he assured.

Town hall commitment

The president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, explained that “this coastline that is now recovered for the use of all is only a first phase.” He is clear that the work will be completed as a whole, since he announced that “the City Council of San Miguel de Abona continues with the second phase and the Cabildo de Tenerife will come behind to promote the third”. Martín frames this intervention in “the objective of continuing to offer and recover spaces for citizens in something that is probably one of our greatest treasures: the coast of Tenerife.”

The president of the Island Corporation assured that “this work meets all the requirements that a walk needs: it is accessible, it has space for different activities, such as those who come by bicycle or children who play in the playgrounds and, above all, it is it opens to the sea, eliminating barriers and allowing us to breathe and discover corners of the south of the Island that have a very special charm».

Arturo González, mayor of the municipality, was “satisfied” with the development of this project, because «stages are being covered in the City Council’s commitment to improve access to the coast. The promenade that we are inaugurating today (yesterday) is an example of our intentions». The councilor from San Miguel valued the inter-administrative support and defended that, “fortunately, the collaboration between the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo and the City Council itself has resulted in this beautiful promenade that we are inaugurating.” In line with what was stated by the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Arturo González confirmed that the municipal government he leads «intends to continue with the execution of the coastal promenade to make the coast of San Miguel de Abona a very attractive place for tourism and , also, for the residents».

The San Miguel Marina promenade is designed with the aim of creating an accessible space, with a minimum width of 1.80 meters, designed to enjoy the sea by improving connections with the coast, which enhances the relationship with the coastline and with solarium areas linked to the bathroom. To facilitate outdoor exercise, this strip of the San Miguel coast has been equipped with a bike lane, which has a minimum width of two meters, while areas for sports and games have been set up.

areas to rest

The layout of the walk inaugurated yesterday is equipped with areas for rest. To this end, pedestrians and cyclists have shaded and rest areas, as well as viewpoints and a sports program to fill the promenade with events that enrich it and enhance the strategic points of the coast. In this way, the enjoyment of a landscape on which restoration actions have been carried out, expanding the green areas, and protection is also encouraged. A kiosk with a terrace has also been installed to complete the leisure and recreation program, as highlighted yesterday by the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands.

To optimize the state of the coast, San Miguel de Abona projects five works for an amount of 4,103,000 euros, some of which are underway: Conditioning both the San Salvador Beach and the access to the sea and the Costa Romba-Golf del Sur promenade, rehabilitate the Hoya del Gusanito coastline and the Amarilla Golf coastal promenade and the surrounding area.
