The capital’s macro-neighborhood of Ofra hides between the towns of Miramar and Las Delicias, in the surroundings of the old Casa Cuna, the health and sports center for 4,500 Tenerife residents. Of these, 3,600 are direct members, a record number in the last ten years, and the rest are other users or people who belong to federated clubs. In short, lovers of physical activity. The data demonstrates a very positive response to the offer of activities aimed at them from multiple disciplines.
The island councilor for Sports, Concepción Rivero, explains that the complex offers the possibility of targeted training sessions, in addition to the possibility of using the gym, the paddle and tennis courts, the swimming pool or the ring for athletics events.
The management of the installation corresponds to the council, through the company Ideco. The balance of last September establishes the highest number of partners in the last decade. Specifically, 3,605 people were counted, to which must be added the members of the clubs, the non-member trainees and the occasional users, reaching a total of 4,490.
Concepción Rivero explains that “Reaching these figures and providing a good service would not be possible without the good work of the team that manages this sports complex.”
The counselor adds that “the continuity of the monitors, the offer of virtual classes, the control over the fulfillment of the work, the progress of the maintenance tasks and the improvements in communication have been key to achieving this achievement.” Rivero affects the offer of directed activities such as the bodypumpcycling, aero dance or yoga.
Short and medium term actions
Among the actions planned to be carried out in the short term is working on improving customer service, moving towards energy efficiency and increasing the offer of classes, including sessions abroad and virtual. In addition, the complex also has medium-term objectives, such as the improvement of the tents and the pavement of the sports center or the adaptation of the outdoor gym.
The last reform of the installation took place in January of this same year. An investment of 55,800 euros made it possible to enhance the outdoor area with new improvements and more outdoor activities. Aerodance and bodycombat classes are taught in the new space with a non-slip floor and cushioning. To them we must add those of HIIT, high intensity interval training in the Outdoor Box.
Concepción Rivero then visited the facility accompanied by Ideco’s CEO, Santiago Romero. He verified the improvements made and valued that all the material “has been made available to users to improve their training.”
Key in the pandemic
The outdoor area was a key factor in compensating as much as possible for the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. For example, in phase 4 of the health alert decreed for the Island of Tenerife in relation to capacity, more permissive when the activities were outdoors.
The outdoor multifunctional area of the sports complex also has a tent with equipment for cardio exercises, a toning circuit and the possibility of using the athletics track. additions with a greater capacity of people in the classes with respect to if these activities were carried out inside. Another advantage for users, especially those who are punctual.
Rivero takes advantage of the occasion to congratulate all the workers in the complex and encourages citizens to continue using this public service. “Among all of us we can make October even better than the previous one,” says the person in charge of the island area. The health and sports center of Tenerife has an address for lovers of physical activity: Calle Diego de Almagro, number 1.
