At two in the morning. That’s the time he City Hall of Santa Cruz has set to turn off the Christmas lights as an energy saving measure. Until now, the lights remained on throughout the night, turning on with street lighting and turning off with it. In this way, says the Councilor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife, “we will save about five hours.” In contrast to this measure, the number of light points throughout the municipality has been increased, so that the total investment in Christmas lighting amounts to approximately 780,000. “It is the largest investment in decorative elements that have been made by the City Council in recent years,” says the mayor of Public Services.

Altogether, a total of 1,228 motifs and arches, 51,830 meters of garlands and 59 floor elements will shine in the city. Added to these elements are three novelties compared to previous years. “We will have a large Christmas tree around Plaza de la Candelaria, lighting in the form of tunnels that Plaza Weyler will have and a poster wishing merry Christmas on the bridge of the municipal swimming pool at the entrance to Santa Cruz”, details Tarife.

In relation to the lights installed last year, 207 arches, 908 Christmas motifs on the lampposts, 29,000 meters of garlands and 90 meters of tunnels were installed, with approximately 30,000 LEDs. The investment then was just over 300,000 euros.
