At the end of the popular vote of the ten selected works -among thirty-eight proposals presented- by the official jury and pending the winner being made public on Monday, it can already be ensured that the mackerel, an outstanding and representative element of both the city and its Carnival, will be the central element of the claim that will promote the 2023 mask party that will be dedicated to New York.
Among the ten finalist works, pre-selected by the jury, only two of them have the mackerel as a central element, a characteristic that defines the two most voted proposals according to the data to which EL DÍA has had access. Now, there are two conditions that will determine which of the two alternatives will be the poster for 2023. The first is the narrow margin of points that exists between the Nareme Melián poster, which has already won the Carnival poster contest 2018 and that in this edition repeats the feat, and another work, also with the mackerel dressed as the Statue of Liberty, with Frank Sinatra singing in the foreground.
In Nareme’s proposal, a wink is made to different modalities of Carnival such as queens, Song of Laughter, seamstresses, lyricists, designers, characters, Rhythm and Harmony, gossipschoreographic groups, coso, murgas, costumes, Burial of the Sardine, choreographic groups, musical groups and cavalcade, words that are included as illuminated signs wrapping a mackerel dressed in a gala dress, with morning coat and top hat.
Just a few tenths distance the preferences of the popular vote between Carnival, the city that never diestitle of the Nareme Melián proposal, or The Chicharro of Liberty, the second favorite option. The eight finalist works are left out of that final race for being the poster for Carnival 2023.
The second conditioning factor that was incorporated into the bases in this edition and that will be of vital importance refers to the proposal made by the official jury that appointed Fiestas to select the claim for the June Carnival, when the experts invited the organization to rethink looking to the future the weight of the jury’s score, since until the last edition the weight of the decision of the jury of experts was limited to the selection of the ten finalist works that were then submitted to popular voting on the internet.
The Councilor for Fiestas, Alfonso Cabello, took into consideration the proposal put forward by the panel of experts from the last edition and included in the election bases for the poster announcing the New York Carnival that the jury’s vote will represent sixty percent in the total computation of the vote, by adding the score of the experts –which prevails– with the popular score. Hence, the jury will be decisive when it comes to breaking the tie that tight margin that exists between the two works of peas given the narrow margin that exists.
LThe presentation of the Carnival 2023 poster, among the options described above, will be made public next Monday during an act that is scheduled to take place at the Casa del Carnaval, which will be attended by both the mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdezsuch as the Councilor for Fiestas, Alfonso Cabello, and the author of the winning work, who will explain what inspired him, the technique and how many characteristics of the work he considers of interest, just as the thirty-eight participants in one of the envelopes that accompanied each proposal.
Waiting to find out which work the jury is opting for – whose score was already made on Monday, September 26 when, after a presentation lunch for the five experts, the ten finalists were selected, including the note to each one–, it should be remembered that Nareme Melián, author of the 2018 Carnival poster and keeps his options to win intact, like the other artist of the Chicharro de la Libertad, whose name has not been revealed.
Nareme Melián, a native of Punta del Hidalgo (1987), is already certain that he is the author of the poster announcing Carnival 2023; yes, of the party that will take place next February in the palm town of Los Llanos de Aridane after in the last edition of August the chicharrero illustrator donated to the palm organization the work that is already a claim in that town.
Nareme Melián already achieved double in authorship of Carnival announcing posters when he won in Santa Cruz, in 2018, and did double with the Arrecife de Lanzarote carnival; in 2019 and 2020 she carried out the works for the festival commissioned by the Arona City Council, and was even a finalist in 2020 in the Cádiz and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival contest, although in 2020 she signed the Maspalomas poster. The official work will be known on Monday 16.
