The Official College of Physicians of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (COMTF) demands more resources to attend to the “tsunami” of psychiatric pathologies that is approaching in all age ranges to the point of understanding that it is a “new pandemic” after the Covid-19.

“Psychiatric pathologies have been exacerbated after what we have experienced, affecting all age ranges of the population, and worryingly in the child-juvenile stage, which not only affects those who suffer from them, but also their families” , says the vice president of the COMTF and child and adolescent psychiatrist, Pedro Javier Rodríguez.
This new reality, he points out in a note, “must alert and prepare the health system to face a demand for care that has only increased, putting health professionals in general and especially mental health specialists.
The COMTF shares the “concern” of thousands of families at the “spectacular increase” in the rates of mental, emotional and behavioral pathologies that have been observed in recent years and that are putting the system and medical professionals to the test.
Along these lines, he comments that many medical organizations have been announcing the exponential increase in suicidal behaviors, depression, anxiety, eating disorders and technology addiction, among other mental health conditions, which must be taken into account and treated “as soon as possible”. Therefore, knowledge, planning and adoption of preventive measures must be improved by professionals in the different areas of psychiatry.
Pedro Javier Rodríguez believes that it is important to establish psychiatric care in all emergency services, equipped with a specialist in psychiatry, who can deal with possible eventualities that must be addressed urgently with specialized quality care.
