La Laguna will build public housing for the first time in a decade



The City Council of The lagoon has informed this Monday that it will expand for the first time in more than a decade the public park of householdswith the construction of 151 new units.

This is possible thanks to the agreement signed last July between the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Municipal Housing and Services Society of La Laguna, Muvisa, and that will mean a total investment of 24,135,673 euros, explains the City Council this Monday.

The mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and the regional councilor for Public Works, Transport and Housing, Sebastián Franquis, visited this morning the 2,200-square-meter municipal plot in the Los Barriales area, in Taco, where the construction of a 71 houses.

Another 44 will be built in Tejina and 36 more in El Centurión.

The mayor announced a municipal contribution of 16,585,000 euros for this program, while the councilor announced that La Laguna will be one of the first municipalities to start building this type of housing in the first months of 2023.

Sebastián Franquis recalled that the European funds for this action must be invested before 2026, and the forecast handled by the Executive is that these investments “fit perfectly with the deadlines for the construction of these 151 homes”.

The counselor pointed out that the Canary Islands is the first Autonomous Community that began to receive the first transfers of European funds, which are allocated to two fundamental items: on the one hand, the rehabilitation of approximately 2,300 homes between public and private; and on the other, the construction of rental housing at affordable prices.

In this second program, the State makes a contribution of 30.8 million euros, and the Autonomous Community, another 45 million.

“In total we are talking about more than 75 million that we are going to invest to build in the Canary Islands around 671 homes at affordable prices for families with fewer resources,” said the counselor.

According to the Government of the Canary Islands, there are currently some 9,500 families registered in the demand register for private housing in the Canary Islands.

Sebastián Franquis explained that in order to qualify for these homes, families must appear in this registry and have an income of less than four times the IPREM and detailed that the maximum rental price will be 400 euros per month.

What will the houses be like?

It is planned to build houses with two rooms and about 72 square meters of useful area plus storage room and garage, in three promotions.

Of these, 44 homes will be built in Tejina, on a plot of about 3,656 square meters owned by Muvisa and an execution cost of 7,024,697 euros.

Another 71 homes will be built in Los Barriales-Taco, on a plot of some 2,200 square meters owned by the City Council, with an approximate execution cost of 10,953,220 euros.

Another 36 homes will be built in the Centurión, on a plot of about 981 square meters, owned by the City Council and Muvisa and a total execution cost of 6,157,755 euros.

The total cost of the actions amounts to 24,135,673 euros, of which the Ministry contributes 7.5 million and the City Council the remaining 16.5.

The works must be completed before June 30, 2026.

Currently, preliminary studies are in the phase and the estimate is that the first development to be carried out will be Tejina, which would begin in August 2023; the work of Los Barriales would begin in January 2024 and the 36 homes of El Centurión in June 2024.
