The council summons the eighth competition for Extra Virgin Olive Oils from Tenerife (EVOO) with the intention of rewarding the best oil painting on the Island. The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, recalls that “olive growing is one of the most dynamic crops in our fields.” He also values the quality results obtained so far that endorse the work for “a safe bet for our farmers”.
The contest, whose deadline for submitting applications will end on the 20th, aims to promote the quality of Tenerife’s oil productions to promote increased sales and give them greater notoriety among consumers.
Grill explains that All natural or legal persons may participate. that produce extra virgin olive oil on the Island, whether they are individual producers or associations, as well as packers that have the corresponding health authorization.
In the same way, extra virgin olive oils produced throughout this year and from olives produced and milled in Tenerife that meet the following requirements may be submitted to the contest: belong to a homogeneous batch of at least 100 liters, and meet the requirements established in the current regulations for the category of EVOO. The samples that compete will compete in the categories of quality and best presentation.
types of oils
In the case of the Quality Award, local producers who present the following types of oils may opt: monovarietal, made from a single variety of olive; and non-monovarietal (mixture or coupage), resulting from the grinding of different varieties of olives or mixtures of oils of different varieties according to the proportions.
Olive growing has become one of the most important crops in Tenerife’s agriculture
The same producers and packers may opt for the Best Presentation Award as for the quality award. This section will also take into account, as is logical, the design and commercial presentation. In 2021 the Great Golden Olive went to Oleoteide, from the Cumbres de Abona Cooperative Society, which obtained the highest rating for its 20 percent Arbequina, 40 percent Picual and 40 percent Arbosana blend-coupage. Meanwhile, the Tomillo brand, from Áridos Herrera (Arico), won the award for best presentation.
The rest of the list
In addition, to complete the list of winners, La Oliva de Oro corresponded to Legado de Abona, with a monovarietal Arbequina oil, and the Olivas de Plata were awarded to the Oleoteide (Abona), Trevejos (Vilaflor de Chasna), Oleomar (Arico) and Oleoarona brands. (Arona).
The awards ceremony for last year’s edition took place within the framework of the 3rd Extra Virgin Olive Oil Fair in Tenerife, which was held in mid-December in the Plaza del Cristo de La Laguna.
Within this framework, which will presumably be repeated this year on a date yet to be specified, attendees will be able to taste, learn about and buy oils from the Island. A culinary demonstration was even given by pastry chef Jesús Camacho, from the Donaire restaurant, located in the southern municipality of Adeje.
The tasting committee of the VII Extra Virgin Olive Oil Contest was chaired by the councilor Parrilla. He then assessed the 25 samples submitted to the contest according to the methodology proposed by the Olive Council. Of the total, 18 did so in the quality phase and seven competed for the best presentation award.
