The citizenship of Cross port has decided that the Castillo beach, in the Playa Jardín complex, be a “smoke-free zone” through the citizen consultation convened by the departments of Citizen Participation, Health and Beaches between the 12th and the 25th of this month about of the creation of smoke-free zones on El Castillo beach.
Thus, through the web platform participates.puertodelacruz.esresidents over 16 years of age were asked if they would choose to convert this enclave into a smoke-free space on the entire surface of the beach, only on half of it, or not establish any zone at all.
231 people participated in the vote. Of that number, 173 (74.89%) have decided that 100% of the beach should be smoke-free, that is, not allowing smoking on the entire surface of the beach. Faced with this, 33 people (14.29%) opted for a 50% smoke-free beach and 25 people (10.82%) for the option that it was possible to smoke in the entire area. The mayor of Participation, María Jesús Hernández, is satisfied with “the momentum of the new platform among citizens, who have been able to get involved for the first time in decision-making through the municipality’s website.”
The mayor of Health and Beaches, Alberto Cabo, appreciates that “we have chosen to support this initiative to create smoke-free zones, which imply an improvement in the quality of beaches, health promotion and pollution reduction” . With the result of this vote, the city intends to join numerous coastal municipalities throughout the country, which have already created smoke-free zones on their beaches as a result of the call for citizen consultations, in order to protect health and environment.
To comply with the citizen’s desire, a prohibition sign will be placed in the area and, in addition, an administrative regulation will be issued at the local level.

On the other hand, the City Council has proceeded to temporarily close the bathroom on Playa Grande de Playa Jardín. The closure order came after seeing changes in biological parameters in some samples collected on Tuesday, which advises as a precautionary measure that bathing is not allowed. The results are awaited to determine if the space can be reopened today.
