The City Council of San Cristóbal de La Laguna will incorporate two new parcels to the fodder self-sufficiency pilot project, with which it is intended to improve the profitability of livestock farms and favor the recovery of agricultural land in the municipality for the production of fodder, thus alleviating the high costs borne by farmers.
The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, has visited the land owned by Muvisa, which together have a surface area of 50,000 square metres, located in the El Centenero area, in Los Baldíos, one of the most fertile soils in the municipality. Along with the mayor were the person in charge of Rural Development, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the City Council of La Laguna, Aitor López, and the general secretary of Asaga Canarias Asaja, Theo Hernando.
“We add new public land to this project to promote the livestock sector, but it is important that the initiative is also supported by the owners of private land in disuse,” said the mayor. For this reason, “we call for these abandoned plots to be made available for an action that will be very beneficial for the primary sector, especially in these times of great difficulty due to rising prices,” he added.
These 50,000 square meters of public land are added to the 6,000 square meter plot in Los Baldíos, which last Friday hosted the Plowing Day, in which an exhibition of plowing by mechanical and traditional means was held with yoke of oxen to the subsequent planting of fodder with which to feed the cattle. The land is worked by the group of ranchers and farmers of the Semilla group.
Councilor Aitor López agrees on the need to continue adding arable land, since “La Laguna has farmland that was historically dedicated to planting fodder or grazing, which is now abandoned.” To which he indicated that “it is essential to make the owners of these lands aware of the importance of taking part in this project, to guarantee a significant degree of supply, with healthy and sustainable food levels and thus limit external dependence.”
