SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 26 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Peinpal scientific committee has advised keeping the Puerto Naos and La Bombilla sites vacated as long as the CO2 levels are not within the exposure limits considered normal for the general population, out of a principle of precaution, prudence and prevention.
Consequently, access will be allowed only for the performance of the work activity, following the protocols established by the occupational risk services.
Since December 13, the post-eruptive phase continues at Cumbre Vieja, in which some volcanic hazards persist, without being able to rule out future reactivations. Anomalous seismic and geochemical activity continues to be recorded, without having reached background levels in the observables.
Anomalous levels of CO2 are maintained, both in Puerto Naos and in La Bombilla and in the area of the volcanic building, as well as the high temperatures and instabilities of the ground in the latter area. The same maritime exclusion zones for navigation continue: 200 m from the front of the lava deltas and 450 m in the area between the north and south deltas.
In addition, both in the cone and in the lava flows, very high temperatures continue to be recorded, which do not have to be seen as incandescence.
There is no presence of volcanic tremor in the seismic signals. Surface seismicity and intermediate depth continue to be located. Seismicity related to the movement of volcanic fluids continues. There are no significant surface deformations.
In the stations that measure continuously installed in La Bombilla and Puerto Naos, anomalously high values of CO2 continue to be recorded, both outside and inside some homes, without any downward trend being observed.
An instrumental surveillance network is currently operational to continuously record CO2 concentrations in the ambient air, both inside and outside buildings, in the population centers of Puerto Naos and La Bombilla, which currently integrates more than 20 sensors of different nature.
The daily average concentration of CO2 in outdoor ambient air recorded by the stations located in La Bombilla shows a wide range of values, from below 5,000 ppm to values above 200,000 ppm.
The daily average concentration of CO2 in the outdoor ambient air recorded by the stations located in Puerto Naos presents a wide range of values from less than 5,000 ppm to 10,000 ppm with values exceeding 45,000 ppm in some of the stations.
The daily average concentration of CO2 in indoor ambient air (ground floors = street level) recorded by the stations located in Puerto Naos presents a wide range of values that exceed 5000 ppm.
The results obtained from the network of alkaline traps installed in Puerto Naos during the last 4.5 months, is allowing the zoning (ground floors at street level) of the areas most affected by anomalous CO2 emissions in this nucleus.
For all of the above, in this post-eruptive stage, it is suggested to keep the color of the volcanic traffic light yellow.
