The Advanced Robotic Surgery Unit of the Hospital Quirónsalud Tenerife has successfully performed, for the first time in private healthcare in the Canary Islands, a robot-assisted pulmonary lobectomy on a cancer patient who required complete removal of the upper lobe of the left lung.
The Thoracic Surgery team that assisted the patient, made up of Dr. Hernández, Dr. Sánchez and Dr. Bonet, described the intervention as successful, removing the lung tissue affected by the tumor and all the lymph nodes in the chest (lymph node dissection). in a more than reasonable time for an intervention of this magnitude.
Robotic-assisted thoracic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows operation through small incisions and adds greater safety and precision to surgery. In addition to providing an increased three-dimensional view and facilitating access to complex anatomical areas, the Da Vinci platform completely eliminates the involuntary tremor that the surgeon may have during the intervention.
The specialist remains in the operating room at all times and handles the instruments from a console that transmits the movements of his hands to the robotic arms. On the operating table, he is assisted by another surgeon and nurses specially trained in robotic surgery.
“Due to the location of the tumor, this patient required a complete lobectomy of the upper lobe of the left lung. The Da Vinci robotic system is the best and most modern option both for this type of surgery and for the most complex urological or gynecological operations”, explains the medical director of Quirónsalud Tenerife, Dr. Óscar Blasco, who pointed out that after three hours intervention, the patient was discharged after three days, to then complete her recovery at home.
