Güímar delegates the environmental assessment in the municipality to the Canarian Government

The Government of the Canary Islands has accepted the decision of the City Council of Güímar, in Tenerife, to delegate to the autonomous community its powers for the environmental assessment of projects that must be authorized by the local corporation.

In this way, the Land Law of 2017 and of the Protected Natural Spaces of the Canary Islands establishes that the approval, substantial modification and adaptation of the territorial, environmental and urban planning instruments will be subject to the environmental evaluation procedure of plans and programs, in the terms contemplated in the basic state legislation.

Meanwhile, Decree Law 15/2020, on urgent measures to promote the primary, energy, tourism and territorial sectors of the Canary Islands, redrafted that law, enabling the possibility of direct delegation of jurisdiction for the environmental assessment of instruments or projects in the regional environmental body.

Here, the City Council of Güímar delegates the competence for the strategic environmental evaluation of the projects, their modifications and adaptations.

For its part, the accepted delegation falls on the Collegiate Body for Environmental Assessment and Single Report of the Canary Islands and, more specifically, on one of its commissions: the Autonomous Commission for Environmental Assessment.
