SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 10 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The secretary general of the Canarian Coalition (CC), Fernando Clavijo, is in favor of “regulating” the figure of former presidents as is already the case in other autonomous communities, but makes it clear that they should not receive a lifetime remuneration if they do not work with a certain function.
“I don’t agree that you have to get paid for doing nothing, that is, anyone who receives a euro from the public treasury has to justify it with their work,” he says in an interview with Europa Press.
Clavijo, senator for the autonomous community and former president of the archipelago between 2015 and 2019, insists that “it is important that it be regulated and if not, nothing happens” and they may be relegated to the role of “Chinese vase as Felipe González said” or to go to talk shows.
The Government of the Canary Islands is preparing a bill in these months in which it is proposed to give a special status to the former presidents, although it would ultimately be the Parliament that adopts or not the possibility of setting a salary.
“If the administration wants to count on the former presidents to do something specific, it has to be regulated and if there is a job it must be paid, if there is no work, you do not have the right to charge or be a burden to society for the mere fact of being a former president. “, summarizes.
