SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 8 Sep. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Cabildo de Tenerife has participated this Thursday in Madrid in a technical meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Government of the Canary Islands to give a decisive boost to the export of old potatoes from the Canary Islands to the Peninsula and the rest of the European territory .
At the meeting, promoted by the island corporation, the necessary procedures were analyzed to lift the sales ban and obtain national and European permits that allow the sale of this local product outside the islands.
The insular president, Pedro Martín, assures in a note that, “once the efficacy of the CO2 chambers to eliminate the Guatemalan moth has been recognized and demonstrated, whatever its stage of development, we must take advantage of the important gastronomic value that they offer potatoes from Tenerife to position them abroad and turn them into a tourist attraction on the island”.
For his part, the island councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, assures that “the export of the old potato from Tenerife would be a fundamental boost for the midlands of the island, which are the most suitable place for planting it, hence the effort of this Cabildo to seek agreements that guarantee its export”.
The insular director of Agriculture and Rural Development, Cayetano Silva, who attended the meeting, explains that currently the work is focused on the protocols that the potato must follow during planting, as well as its transport from the orchard to a CO2 chamber. and from the camera to the table of the destination country.
“These protocols are fundamental because they will guarantee that, at no time, the potato is contaminated with the Guatemalan moth or any other pest,” he points out.
On behalf of the Ministry, the General Director of Agricultural Production Health, Valentín Almanza, and on behalf of the Canarian Executive, the General Director of Agriculture, Augusto González, attended.
In this sense, Cayetano Silva indicates that this meeting has been the result of the work carried out jointly by the technical service of Agriculture of the insular corporation and the Canarian Executive with the aim of allowing the movement of Canarian potatoes in Europe again, and promote, consequently, its cultivation and preservation on the islands.
