The islands recover this month the tourists lost before the pandemic and spending increases by 7.5%

The Canary Islands closed the month of July with an annual increase of 148.4% in the arrival of foreign tourists, reaching a total of 1,028,960 and with spending that skyrocketed to 1,609 million, 115.8% more than in July of last year, according to data published this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
The archipelago ranked as the fifth autonomous community with an 11.3% market share and the United Kingdom has established itself as the main client of the islands with 41.2% ahead of Germany, which remains at 15.4 %.
In the first seven months of the year, the Canary Islands have received a total of 6,774,623 visitors, which is 480.1% more than in the same period of the previous year.
As for the average expenditure, it stood at 1,564 euros, 3% more, at a rate of 184 euros per day (+10.8%) and with an average duration of the trip of 8.5 days, 7% less while in the accumulated figure for the year stood at 8,623 million, 188.9% more.
The islands, despite being the fifth autonomous community in visitor arrivals, ranked third in volume of spending with a total of 13.6% of the country.
Compared to July 2019, before the pandemic was decreed, the archipelago practically recovered the lost tourists – that month 1,031,598 arrived compared to 1,028,960 this year – and spending has increased by 7, 5%.
In total, Spain received last July the visit of about 9.1 million international tourists, which means doubling (106.2%) the figure registered in the same month of 2021 and these visitors spent more than 11,870 million euros, more than double that of a year earlier, practically standing at pre-covid levels.
With this, in the first seven months of the year the number of international visitors multiplied by four with respect to the same period of the previous year. Thus, until July the number of tourists who visited Spain increased by 299.9% and touched the figure of 39.3 million. In the same period of 2021, a total of 9.8 million international visitors arrived in the country.
With this new rise in July, both the arrival of international tourists and the spending they make in Spain have already accumulated thirteen consecutive months of year-on-year increases after the break due to the coronavirus.
The United Kingdom was the main source country of visitors to Spain in July, with a total of 1.9 million tourists, which represents 20.9% of the total and an increase of 241.6% compared to July 2021. France and Germany were the next countries to contribute visitors. France with 1.4 million (61% more in annual rate) and Germany close to 1.1 million (55% more).
Among the rest of the countries of residence, the annual growth of tourists from Ireland (347.8%), the United States (198.2%) and Italy (113.4%) stands out.
In the first seven months of the year, the United Kingdom also continues to lead with nearly 8.4 million tourists who chose to visit Spain (annual increase of 908.5%), followed by Germany (with almost 5.5 million, and an increase of 190.7%) and France (with more than 5.3 million, 159.7% more).
BALEARIC ISLANDS, MAIN DESTINATION
The Balearic Islands were once again the main destination for international tourists in July, with 25.1% of the total. They are followed by Catalonia (21.8%) and the Valencian Community (12.4%).
Almost 2.3 million tourists arrive in the Balearic Islands, 72.2% more than in July 2021. The main countries of residence of tourists from this community are the United Kingdom (with 27% of the total) and Germany (25 %).
The INE ensures that in the accumulated of the first seven months of 2021 the communities that received the most tourists were Catalonia (with almost 8 million and an increase of 346.8% compared to the same period of 2021), Balearic Islands (with almost 7, 5 million and an increase of 190.1%) and Canarias (with almost 6.8 million, 480.1% more).
The airport route was preferred by international tourists to arrive in Spain with a total of 7.1 million, which represents an annual increase of 111.1%. 65.3% more tourists arrived by rail, 79.1% more arrived by road and 776.6% more by port.
The number of tourists who used market accommodation as their main mode of accommodation in July increased by 121.7% in the annual rate. Within this type, hotel accommodation grew by 119.5%, while rental housing rose by 127.1%.
For its part, non-market accommodation increased by 47%. Tourists staying in the homes of relatives or friends rose by 55.2% and those staying in owned homes by 26.8%.
Leisure, recreation and vacations were the main reason for the trip to Spain for 8.3 million tourists in July, which represents an annual increase of 114%. For business and professional reasons 298,604 arrived (64.3% more) and for other reasons 484,721 (40% more).
International tourists spend an average of four to seven nights. The number of visitors increased by 49.2% among those who did not spend the night (excursionists), while it grew by 44.9% among tourists with longer stays (more than 15 nights).
In July, 6.9 million tourists traveled without a tourist package, which represents an annual increase of 92.4%. Almost 2.2 million arrived with a tourist package, 167.2% more.
10% INCREASE IN AVERAGE SPENDING PER TOURIST
The increase continues to lead to an increase in spending that rises to 11,869 million in July, a figure that doubles that registered in the same month of the previous year when it stood at 5,229 million.
The average expenditure stands at 1,309 euros, with an annual increase of 10.1%. For its part, the average daily expenditure grew by 17.4%, to 170 euros.
The average duration of international tourist trips is 7.7 days, which is 0.5 days less than in July 2021.
During the first seven months of 2022, spending increased by 331.5% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 47,637 million euros.
The main issuing countries regarding the level of spending were the United Kingdom (with 20% of the total), Germany (11.3%) and France (10.2%). Spending by tourists residing in the United Kingdom increased by 258.8% in the annual rate, that of those from Germany by 56.4% and that of those from France by 70.3%.
In the first seven months of 2022, the United Kingdom was the country with the highest accumulated spending (19.9% of the total). They are followed by Germany (13.5%) and France (8.7%).
The autonomous communities with the greatest weight in tourist spending were Balearic Islands Illes Balears (with 23.6% of the total), Catalonia (21.8%) and Canarias (13.6%). Tourist spending increased by 71.7% in the annual rate in the Balearic Islands, 195.4% in Catalonia and 155.8% in the Canary Islands.
INE data show that in the first seven months of 2022 the main destination communities with the highest accumulated spending were Canarias (with 20.3% of the total), Cataluña (18.5%) and Illes Balears (18.1%) .
By items, the main expense was registered in accommodation with 21.2% of the total (+131.1 compared to 2021). It is followed by spending on activities and transportation, with 18.6% and 18.1% of the total, respectively (in both cases, the figure for the previous year is doubled).
65.2% of total spending in July was made by tourists who stayed overnight in hotel accommodation, with an annual increase of 144.9%. For its part, spending on non-market accommodation grew by 56.1%.
The expenditure of tourists who do not travel with a tourist package (which represents 75.5% of the total) increased by 112.6% in the annual rate. That of those who hire a tour package increases by 186.6%.
Regarding the reason for the trip, tourists who visit Spain for leisure generate 91.1% of total spending (with a disbursement 136.1% higher than in July 2021).
