Overnight stays in apartments shot up 119.9% in the Canary Islands in July, compared to the same month last year, to exceed 2.3 million, according to provisional data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) made public this Wednesday.
However, they are still below the pre-pandemic figures, since in July 2019 a total of 2,558,716 overnight stays were registered, 9.4%.
The 328,353 travelers who occupied apartments in the archipelago had an average stay of 7.06 days and of the total overnight stays, 1,830,525 corresponded to foreign tourists.
In addition, the occupation by apartments reached 69% and the subsector generated a total of 10,815 jobs.
The Canary Islands were the preferred destination in July, although the highest occupancy, with 77.3% of the apartments on offer, was in the Balearic Islands.
By tourist areas, the Costa Blanca is the preferred destination, with more than 1.1 million overnight stays, and the islands of Ibiza-Formentera have the highest occupancy rate, with 86.7% of the apartments offered.
In contrast, the tourist spots with the highest number of overnight stays in July were San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria), Arona (Tenerife) and Tías (Lanzarote).
In the country as a whole, overnight stays in campsites, rural accommodation and hostels accumulated in the first seven months of the year are above the levels before the pandemic, exceeding those of the same period in 2019, with more than 21.8 million those registered last July.
This means, according to provisional data from the Spanish statistical institute, a growth of 36.8% in July compared to 15.9 million in the same month last year.
This boost was a consequence, above all, of the 135.8% increase in overnight stays by foreigners in that month. Those of the Spaniards, on the contrary, fell by 1.1% in the seventh month of the year.
Of the 21.8 million overnight stays registered by the statistical institute in July, 11.4 million were residents of Spain, 7 million visitors from European Union countries and another 3.3 million from the rest of the world.
Data from the Spanish statistical institute show that the average stay in Spanish non-hotel accommodation rose in July to 4.7 overnight stays per traveller.
With all this, during the first seven months of 2022, overnight stays in this type of accommodation have doubled since they increased by 103.1% compared to the same period of the previous year.
THE OVERNIGHT STAYS OF SPANIARDS IN APARTMENTS ARE DOWN
Overnight stays in tourist apartments increased by 52% last July, driven above all by the increase in those made by non-residents, which grew by 163.2%. For their part, those of residents fell by 8.7%.
The average stay increased by 8.7% compared to July 2021, standing at 5.6 overnight stays per traveler and 51.5% of the places offered were occupied, which is 36.5% more than in the same month of 2021. The weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces stood at 53.1%, with an increase of 33.6%.
Overnight stays by non-residents in tourist apartments represented 61.2% of the total. The United Kingdom was the main source market, with more than 1.8 million, the next market being France, with 735,493.
NON-RESIDENT CAMPSITES DOUBLE
Overnight stays at campsites registered an increase of 26.9% in July compared to the same month of the previous year. Those of residents grew by 1.9% and those of non-residents by 107.6%.
According to the INE, during July 52.2% of the offered plots were occupied, 16.1% more than in the same month of 2021. The weekend occupancy rate reached 55.3%, with an increase 12% annual
38.7% of the overnight stays in campsites were made by non-resident travellers. The Netherlands was the main issuing market, with 30.2% of the total of non-residents, 110.4% more than in July 2021.
Catalonia was the preferred destination for campsites, with more than 4.3 million overnight stays, which represents an increase of 44.1% in the annual rate. The Basque Country reached the highest occupancy rate, with 70.2% of the plots offered.
By tourist areas, the Costa Brava was the preferred destination, with more than 2 million overnight stays. The Costa Blanca (Alicante) presented the highest occupancy rate, with 73.4% of the plots offered.
The tourist spots with the most overnight stays were Torroella de Montgrí, Mont-Roig del Camp and Tarragona.
GROWTH IN RURAL ACCOMMODATION
INE data indicate that overnight stays in rural tourism accommodation showed an annual increase of 5.1% in July. Those of residents fell by 7.3%, while those of non-residents rose by 61.8%.
In rural tourism accommodation, 33.1% of the beds were occupied, 1.9% more than in July 2021. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 44.1%, with an annual increase 4.6%
By communities, the Baleric Islands was the preferred destination, with 224,211 overnight stays, 23% more than in July 2021. This community also reached the highest occupancy rate, with 69.1% of the places offered.
By tourist areas, the Island of Mallorca was the preferred destination, with 178,911 overnight stays. The Island of Menorca reached the highest occupancy, with 75.2% of the places offered.
With regard to hostels, more than 1.1 million overnight stays were registered in July, which represents an annual increase of 77.9%. Those of residents increased by 48.5% and those of non-residents by 190.2%.
45.1% of the bedplaces were occupied, 49.7% more than in July 2021. The weekend occupancy rate reached 45%, with an increase of 54.6%.
Galicia was the preferred destination, with 247,795 overnight stays. The Valencian Community reached the highest occupancy, with 70.6% of the places offered.
The INE also released this Wednesday the price index that shows an increase of 12.6% in apartments, 5.5% in campsites and 7.1% in rural tourism accommodation.
INCREASE IN OVERNIGHT STAYS ESPECIALLY AMONG NON-RESIDENTS
With all this, the INE data shows how overnight stays in all Spanish collective tourist accommodation (hotels, apartments, campsites, rural tourism accommodation and hostels) increased by 51.7% in July in the annual rate.
Those of residents rose by 2.6% and those of non-residents by 133.1%. The average stay grew by 9.3%, up to 3.8 overnight stays per traveler.
Of the total overnight stays in collective tourist accommodation, 65.9% corresponded to hotels and 34.1% to non-hotel tourist accommodation.
The main issuing markets in the set of regulated tourist accommodation were the British (with 25.1% of the total overnight stays by non-residents), German (15.4%) and French (11.3%).
Catalonia was the preferred destination, with more than 13.9 million overnight stays (72.9% more than in July 2021). They are followed by the Balearic Islands, with more than 12.5 million (and an increase of 84.1%) and Andalusia, with more than 9.1 million (and an annual increase of 23.7%).
