SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 29 Aug. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Secretary of Organization of the PSOE, Nira Fierro, highlighted this Monday the increase in the subsidy for land transport –bus and tramway– from 30% to 50% by the State while at the same time accusing the opposition of “betray” the workers by opposing in Congress the latest decree-law to alleviate the consequences of the war in Ukraine.

Fierro has also highlighted the “unique and sensitive vision” of the Canary Islands, incorporating a coverage 20 points higher than that which will be applied in the rest of the country (50% compared to 30%) and extending to the urban transport of the islands, in this case, buses and tram, which translates into a “investment per inhabitant higher than that forecast in the rest of the territory”, of about 24 million euros in total, which is added to the 170 million that the administrations divert each year to public transport of the islands.

The ultimate goal, he pointed out, is to help the middle and working class of the islands and reduce the use of private vehicles, thereby helping to reduce energy dependence and the carbon footprint in line with the ‘Pacto de los Jameos’ signed for all the games.

The leader of the Canarian Socialists has also highlighted “the willingness and effort of the Government of Spain to meet the demand of the President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, to extend this discount on the islands, which in practice means that we will pay less for use the island’s public transport than in the rest of the country” and with an added incentive, which is “to continue advancing in sustainability and the development of clean energy”.

On the contrary, Fierro has lamented the “unsupportive obstructionism” of those parties that, despite the exceptionality of the moment, have spoken out against both this discount and the energy saving plan as a whole agreed a week ago in the Congress of the Deputies by a “loose majority”.

In his opinion, it is an opposition that “does not look out for the general interest and betrays the middle and working class of the Canary Islands and the country” because this legislative project also included an increase in scholarships for students or direct aid for transport sector and, however, “they have preferred to vote no together with the extreme right of Vox”.

“Demagoguery is superfluous in politics. Let’s be more responsible and rigorous. From the Socialist Party we will continue working to defend the social majority that we represent, putting our shoulders to the wheel, making constructive contributions and advancing towards a fairer society”, he concluded.
