Candlemas is in mourning, after the death of one of its most appreciated artisans inside and outside the municipality, Antonio Gonzalez Perazawho will be buried today, after leaving the entourage of the Santa Ana funeral home, in the municipal cemetery, at 10:30 am.
“Today we have learned the sad news of the death of Antonio González Peraza, a well-known basket maker in this municipality. From the City Council of Candelaria, on behalf of the Municipal Corporation, the mayor, Mari Brito, wants to convey condolences to her family and friends, “wrote Mari Brito in the social networks.
Antonio González Peraza, 87, has spent his whole life plaiting the chestnut stick, which made him, until a few years ago, one of the few basket makers who never failed at fairs, markets and craft shows throughout the island. He stood out for the mastery of the technique and the knowledge of the varied traditional typology, and he kept in force throughout his life one of the trades in danger of extinction, such as rod basketry, taking care with care of the sources of obtaining the raw material.
In November 2015, in the municipal plenary hall, the Cabildo de Tenerife and the City Council of Candelaria paid tribute to him, on his 80th birthday, together with the artisans Candelaria Gorrín (also a cane basket maker) and María Isabel Hernández (a rose maker, jigsaw and boxer), on the occasion of the Insular Show of Traditional Crafts.
