The culture of old potatoes in Los Realejos is the guide published by the City Council on the culture linked to their cultivation in the municipality. A document submitted by Mayor of Los Realejos, Adolfo González, and the Councilor for Rural Development, Alexis Hernández, together with his editor and technician from Cultania (Comprehensive Management of Culture and Historical Heritage), Yaiza González Hernández.
The 1,500 copies published will be distributed among the agricultural sector of the town, in activities to stimulate the Department of Rural Development, in didactic actions in educational centers and in gastronomic promotion events, among others, in addition to being already available in digital format for download and consultation through the municipal website www.losrealejos.es .
For the mayor of Los Realejos, Adolfo González, «The beautiful thing about the culture of the beautiful potato is the people who have made it possible, who for so many years have worked the land, people who inherited the witness of the dedication and effort of the field. That is what this publication collects, a review of everything that surrounds one of the most unique crops on our islands.”
The manager states that “This jewel, coming from America, has been preserved thanks to our people since it arrived in the municipality in 1622, according to the historical reference that José Antonio de Viera y Clavijo made of this event, people who have made culture by cultivating».
The Councilor for Rural Development claims that, “as stated in this guide, the potato has become a benchmark in our agricultural landscape and our gastronomy, an inseparable element from our character, our customs and trades, even to our more traditional recipes».
The guide The culture of old potatoes in Los Realejos is a document that “tries to value the first producer, the one who plants them every year, the one who pampers the land, the one who, fighting against the weather and pests, continues to bet on conservation harvest after harvest, a tribute to recognize the always difficult agricultural work, to understand and learn more about the potato and the culture around it, something that has defined us as a people and is part of our idiosyncrasy”, concludes the councilor.
