They save the life of a pilgrim

«I was born in the Autonomous Police». This is how Monica responds when she is asked about her permanence in the security corps, which she has been a part of since her first promotion. Together with Marcelo, another colleague from the subgroup of the police unit to which they are assigned, they saved the life of a man in his sixties, who suffered a heart attack on the afternoon of August 15, the big day of the festivities, after attending to the call for help from his wife, with whom he had gone to see the Virgin of Candelaria.

The acts in honor of the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands had already entered their final stretch at the Villa Mariana. On the morning of the 15th, La Guanchería de Los Realejos arrived, followed by the 700 athletes who came running from La Granja park to make way for the military parade and the beginning of the Eucharist.

From two in the afternoon, when the procession of the Virgin of Candelaria around the square had already finished, Mónica and Marcelo had already joined to carry out their functions with the presence of the main authorities of the Canary Islands and, at the end, they resumed the controls between visitors and neighbors on Los Menceyes avenue. Shortly after seven in the afternoon, Monica responds to the cry for help from a woman who asked for help for her husband, who was unwell in the back of the Punta Larga Shopping Center, with the aggravating circumstance that he had a history of angina. of chest

The wife of this retired firefighter, over sixty years old, had required the presence of health personnel, but fate meant that Mónica and Marcelo were carrying out controls on citizen security. As soon as she noticed the call for help, Monica moved with the woman in search of the man, who was standing up, although his face denounced his weakness; In parallel, Marcelo went with the patrol car. On the way, the agent asked the firefighter’s wife to call 1-1-2, since they had registered her phone with the alert, and to put the call through to identify herself and follow instructions, always in coordination with the fire department itself. the Canarian Police Tabona30.

Ahead, two issues to clarify. The first, how long did the ambulance take? From 1-1-2 they confirmed that he was still at the same level as Tabaiba and Radazul, so they summoned the Canarian Police unit to proceed with the transfer with their means. The second question, where to go: Hospital La Candelaria or Centro de Salud de la Villa?

Help the retired firefighter

Following the instructions of the Cecoes, was transferred to the center of the Villa. When they warned the man not to worry about the acoustic alert, he was when he explained to them not to worry about it, because until a few years he had been a firefighter.

Already in the Emergency Room, the patient was stabilized, with the attention of Marcelo, who ended up parking the car in which the couple who had been surprised by this health mishap had traveled to see the Virgin.

When the service was over and the folkloric offering to the Patron was about to end, a message arrived for these agents: Congratulations on your outstanding example of the SUC Tenerife, because the person served was suffering from a heart attack and if it hadn’t been for Mónica and Marcelo would have died with almost total certainty.

The agent, a native of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and with thirteen years of service in the Canarian Police, together with her partner in the operation, who arrived at the Corps during the worst incidence of Covid, celebrate this intervention, and she, who is tanned, comments on it in fires like the one in Vilaflor, or when it evacuated people in other fires, not forgetting the two volcanic eruptions, the first in El Hierro, and the second, on the island of La Palma. Without a doubt, it has been a “rewarding experience”.
