In a statement, the federation calls on the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Adeje City Council “not to look the other way, come out of their complicit silence and defend the general interest” in this matter because, it adds, the biodiversity present in this space and the historical and archaeological heritage belongs to all the Canary Islands.
“There are many reasons that prompt an immediate precautionary stoppage of the works, not only because of the irreversible disappearance of a space with high environmental value, with a unique flora and fauna and with a unique historical and ethnographic heritage as it contains several archaeological sites. that should be rigorously protected”, affirms the ecological federation.
For this reason, it also requests that the heritage be inventoried, measures be put in place to assess the damage and the place be restored to its original state, as it stresses that the Cuna del Alma project “intends to destroy one of the few still virgin enclaves” in the south of Tenerife, in the surroundings of Puertito de Adeje.
This type of tourism megaproject only contributes to aggravating, even more, the current ecological, climatic and energy resource scarcity crisis, adds Ben Magec-Ecologistas en Acción, who criticizes the “betting on ”more of the same” in tourism matter”, something that “does not make any sense in the current world situation”.
The Canarian Ecological Federation warns that “urban planning irregularities and possibly infractions in environmental matters and against cultural heritage” cannot continue to be committed, as in its opinion is the case of the Cuna del Alma project, with total “impunity” and before the passive gaze of the administrations responsible for allowing its execution.
It also adds that “the possible benefits of this unnecessary work will end up in the coffers of foreign companies increasingly specialized in speculation and lack of scruples in the face of the destruction of our territory.”
Faced with this situation, there is only the alternative of decreasing tourism through a new moratorium on the implementation of new infrastructures that are so polluting and unsustainable, says Ben Magec, who highlights that mitigation and adaptation to climate change “so many times announced by the regional government ” is not compatible with continuing to bet on the implementation of new hotel developments and the increase in accommodation beds.
