The City Council of La Laguna has started the rehabilitation works of the kiosk in the Parque Estudiante Javier Fernández Quesada, a space that houses the first Poeteca de Canarias, a cultural project aimed at promoting reading. The works, carried out from the Works and Infrastructures area, focus on improving accessibility with the execution of a ramp at the entrance to the enclosure, the improvement of the channeling of rainwater and the reform of the bathrooms.
The mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and the mayor of Culture and president of the Autonomous Organization for Musical Activities (OAAM), Yaiza López Landi, celebrate “the recovery of this space in a very appropriate environment and with great possibilities for the promotion of reading ”, especially among the people who visit the park on a daily basis and children and young people, due to its proximity to several educational centers and the main building of the University.
“This reform allows us to continue advancing in our commitment to guarantee accessibility to all public spaces, and especially those for cultural use,” says Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, who considers that the kiosk of the also known as Parque de Los Dragos is “a space that fully identifies with a unique initiative of the nature of the Poeteca and that we recover for the public after almost three decades in disuse”.
López Landi estimates that this reform “will allow the services provided by the Poeteca to be improved, which to date were conditioned because the premises did not meet the necessary conditions, with which we lay the foundations for having a program of activities with greater dimensions and scope. ”.
The councilor recalls that the Poeteca began its journey in June 2021. Its objective is to bring literary creation closer to the general public and contribute to university research on poetry. Its program of activities includes poetry readings, workshops and literary meetings, with the aim of bringing literary creation closer to citizens.
The mayor underlines the role played by the Tres Orillas Cultural Association in making this project a reality, which also has the support of the Cabildo de Tenerife and has a freely accessible bibliographic collection.
