The City Council of La Laguna will undertake the accessibility works on the Camino de La Villa, in the surroundings of the church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and its confluence with José Luis Reina Delgado street. The works, which have an execution period of 30 days, have an award budget of 40,846 euros.
“This is an intervention long demanded by the residents of the Camino de La Villa and, in a very particular way, by the people who go to the church, for which an action was necessary to solve the problems of circulation to pedestrians and that it was also respectful of the existing wooded spaces,” says the mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, who recalls “the municipal government’s commitment to improving and guaranteeing the accessibility of public spaces, especially for elderly, people with reduced mobility or with some type of disability. For his part, the Councilor for Works, Infrastructure and Accessibility, Josimar Hernández, explains that with this action “we address the need to improve the accessibility of the Camino de La Villa at its intersection with José Luis Reina Delgado Street, which evacuates all traffic from the Marcerol estate, where numerous industrial buildings are located. In addition, this sidewalk is located on one of the pedestrian itineraries towards the nearby CEIP Camino de La Villa, so its action is doubly necessary”.
“To do this”, details the mayor, “the intention is to build a new sidewalk on the edge of the road where it does not exist now, with the consequent danger for pedestrians, and also extend the existing sidewalk, at the end closest to the church, which, being currently occupied by large trees, makes the movement of people notably difficult”.
In this sense, Josimar Hernández comments that from the technical office of the Urban Planning area “different alternatives were being considered to put an end to the accessibility problems avoiding the affection to the trees”, finally opting for the extension of the steel surface.
The action planned by the City Council also includes the lowering of the sidewalk in the form of a three-level ford and following the guidelines established in the technical document on basic conditions of accessibility and non-discrimination for access and use of urbanized public spaces.
