SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 17 Aug. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has transferred this Wednesday the solidarity that Pope Francis has shown to the island of La Palma after suffering the ‘Cumbre Vieja’ volcano, which he assures is “very present”.
This was indicated by Torres, in statements to journalists, after being received in a general audience by the Pope together with the delegation of the Tenerife Sports Club on the occasion of the celebration of its centenary.
The president of the Canary Islands has admitted that it has been a “very emotional” moment, of which he is left with the “smile, empathy” of the head of state of Vatican City, whom he has defined as a “charismatic person, who defends the most vulnerable, the most needy, which has had La Palma very present, also to migratory phenomena. Both events are a reality in the Canary Islands”.
In this sense, he has indicated that the Pope “has been, is and will continue to be at the side” of the palmeros, to whom he has affirmed he sent his message of solidarity after in September 2021 “a wound” was opened in La Palma, which “will never be closed and will not” be able to give citizens back their homes, their land, their lost memories.
“We will be able to alleviate that pain and help them with subsidies, with houses that we have delivered, prefabricated flats, aid to companies, to the agricultural sector, with civil society by their side, but we must recognize that the pain is too great to be cover,” he added.
THEY GIVE HIM THE TENERIFE T-SHIRT AND A PINTADERA
In the audience in which Pope Francis received the CD Tenerife delegation, and in which the Canarian president was present, he was given the shirt with the number 10 and his name, the pennant and the scarf.
In addition, Torres has given him a painting that symbolizes the pre-Hispanic reality of the Canary Islands.
The Canarian president has indicated that the centenary of CD Tenerife represents “100 years of good history, of great triumphs, of unforgettable moments, also of some sadness” although he has pointed out that “it is what football and sport have, that sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t, you have to know how to do it, and know how to win as well as knowing how to recognize when you don’t win and CD Tenerife has done it”.
Finally, he thanked CD Tenerife for the invitation to attend the Pope’s audience and stated that his wishes are for the two Canarian teams to be promoted to the First Division because “it is the best thing that can happen to the Canary Islands”.
