Service Reports of the Local Police of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has closed the statistical analysis of the results of the recent control campaign on the presence of alcohol and drugs among drivers who circulate in the municipality. Said campaign, promoted by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) was carried out between August 8 and 14, completing a total of 530 breathalyzer tests; Of that number, 4.33 percent of them gave a positive result.

Of those 23 drivers who were driving under the influence of alcohol, four exceeded the rate considered as a crime against road safety; while the other 19 were above the maximum allowed rate of 0.25 milligrams per liter of expired air. These controls of the Local Police of the capital were distributed through different roads of the municipality and at different times, both working days and holidays.

A total of 51 drivers were tested for the presence of narcotic substances in their body, of which 13, 25.4 percent, gave positive results. By substances, the tests revealed that eight drivers had used cocaine and five cannabis.

The daily average of controlled drivers amounted to about 75 vehicles, although there were days when these figures reached 98 cars per day, specifically on Thursday, August 11. The objective of these campaigns is to prevent driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, an issue that is usually behind many traffic accidents, being behaviors that constitute a serious risk for the rest of the road users, whether they are pedestrians or other drivers.

In the section on sanctions for issues related to the compulsory documentation of drivers and vehicles, three cases of lack of compulsory insurance were quantified; seven cars with the Technical Inspection of Vehicles (ITV) without being in force; and four drivers whose driving licenses had expired. For the realization of these devices, we had the support of the different Service Operational Units every day.

In several of the controls carried out within this campaign, the group of Canine Guides of the Local Police also participated, the data of their work in these devices focus on almost thirty administrative acts for the possession of narcotic substances. In total there were 29 reports, of which 25 were for the detection of hashish, two for marijuana and the other two for cocaine.
