The municipal government officially formulates, before the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo de Tenerife, the offer of Puerto de la Cruz as the headquarters of the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan). “The city makes itself available” to the aforementioned institutions “to enable all avenues of collaboration” that enable “a worthy space and in accordance with the importance of Involcan and its research for the future of the Canary Islands,” says the group led by Marco Gonzalez.
The Puerto Rican government demands from the regional and insular Executives the decentralization that it attributes to the central government in order, in this way, «to make, as far as possible, that its dependent entities are not only located in the metropolitan areas of the two central islands, but in others like Puerto de la Cruz, where the Involcan headquarters must return, ”he adds.
The government of Puerto de la Cruz establishes that the Involcan also carries out work related to the promotion of geotourism, in order to contribute to the diversification of the offer of this destination. “This line of work, which opens a window of opportunity for the municipality and the Islands, in general, is of great interest” for Puerto de la Cruz.
In addition to recalling the status of “pioneer city of tourism in the Canary Islands”, the local government maintains that the city’s tourism market is “closely linked to nature and, also, to innovation in a context of expanded culture, where research it plays a key role in disseminating knowledge, thus attracting another type of traveller». Something that is evident in events such as The Night of the Volcanoes, which is already preparing its September edition, after being postponed last year due to the volcanic eruption in La Palma.
Another of the reasons why the City Council of Puerto de la Cruz makes the offer for the municipality to host the Involcan headquarters is that in it “the distinguished geologist Telesforo Bravo was born and developed a large part of his career, who now, through its foundation –also based in the Valle de La Orotava–, it can produce great advances in a context of joint efforts in the work of awareness and dissemination».
