SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 10 Aug. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The spokeswoman for the Popular Party of the Canary Islands, Noelia García Leal, has assured that the refusal of the Sánchez Government to discount 100% of regular passenger transport in the Islands leaves the Archipelago in the “gutter” again and has accused President Ángel Víctor Torres for having “completely” forgotten his commitment to the Canary Islands, to the municipalities of the Islands and to the Canary Islands.
“The president of the central government does not quite understand the specificities of the Canary Islands and intends to throw the ball at the roof of the local entities, not assuming the responsibility that corresponds to him to serve the Islands as well as the rest of the national territory,” he said.
“Pretending that the councils and municipalities are the ones who take charge of the bonus to reach 100% is to live with our backs to the reality of our islands and municipalities, it would mean suffocating even more the local entities that have made and continue to make a titanic effort to face the economic crisis generated by the covid pandemic,” highlighted the PP spokeswoman.
García Leal regretted that the regional president “has not been able to make his chief of ranks understand the complicated situation of the majority of local corporations to make a new disbursement that could considerably reduce their economic capacity to face the most pressing needs of their neighbours”.
In this sense, the popular spokeswoman added that Torres “does not remember the words he spoke during his investiture speech, stating that he would be the mayor of the 88 municipalities of the Canary Islands.” “He knows perfectly the entrails and weaknesses of a city council, thanks to his time as councilor and mayor, experience that he omits when exercising his functions as regional president, accommodated before the guidelines that dictate in La Moncloa, although they seriously harm the the islands and the canaries”, he added.
According to the popular spokesperson, “it is one more chapter of this story in which Sánchez’s decisions place us in the drawer of oblivion of his Government, without taking into account the serious reality of the Archipelago, also counting on the consent of the regional president who is hieratic in the face of Madrid’s nonsense, unable to strike a blow on the table to demand the advance of the Canary Islands. Proof of this is, for example, that our local entities are still waiting for extraordinary funds to deal with the pandemic”.
On the other hand, Noelia García Leal affirmed that Torres’s “complacent” attitude towards the Prime Minister’s statements justifying his refusal to establish the 100% subsidy for intercity transport in the Archipelago has been “unfortunate”. “Defending this decision based on the 75% subsidy for transfers of Canarian residents by air and sea is nonsense, a joke and a real insult to our rights,” stressed the leader of the PP.
“From the Popular Party of the Canary Islands we will continue in the battle to claim and demand from the central Executive what corresponds to the Canary Islands and from the regional government to stand up and defend the interests of our local entities and all Canarians,” García Leal added. .
