The centennial Teldense company Molino de Fuego has obtained two awards in the Official Contest of Gofio Agrocanarias 2022, held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife last Tuesday. The firm from San Gregorio, which has been grinding grain since its foundation in 1903, has obtained the Great Gold Medal for gofio made from millet and the jury’s special distinction for Best Local Grain Gofio 2022. The event featured the presentation of 86 samples from 19 mills on the islands and had Gofio Gomero as the first brand, which won the award for best gofio in the Archipelago.
The Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Telde City Council, Serving Gonzalezhas transferred the recognition to the company on behalf of the consistory and has taken the opportunity to remember the high value of this zero kilometer gofio “These recognitions ratify the quality of this productwhich has been part of the diet of the Canary Islanders since pre-Hispanic times and which in recent years has become an ingredient in the most innovative cuisine in Telde».
A gofio of the country
If something distinguishes Molino de Fuego, it is its production of gofio from the country, bought from all the farmers on the island and the most demanded by its customers. “This is the star product, we sell more than 200 kilos a day and we distribute it to many restaurants in Melenera”, assures Elena Sánchez, the fourth generation of the family at the head of a business that has been active for 120 years without interruption. “These awards are a great joy for the company, since the last three years we have had a very bad time and we were about to close,” confesses Elena, who blames the pandemic and previous mismanagement for these far-reaching economic problems. Now, she acknowledges that they have come back and that they are “more eager than ever” to continue prolonging the history of this centenary mill on the Island.
