The City Council of Buenavista del Norte has allocated 12,850 euros to a project for the preventive conservation of the Punta Negra shell midden, which includes its enhancement and the execution of measures to reverse, as far as possible, the deterioration that this deposit has suffered archaeological site of the coastal area of the municipality in recent years.
Esteban Lorenzo, Councilor for Cultural Heritage, points out that, precisely, the intervention in the Punta Negra shell midden arises from the need to undertake actions to stop said deterioration. “The affections have been of a different nature. Among them are the abandonment that the site has suffered so far, looting, vandalism, and the action of irrigation water from the golf course.
The mayor reports that, among other actions, the geotextile will be definitively withdrawn; to the cleaning of vegetation; surface conservation, and the installation of a poster with adapted content, according to the models already established for the Buenavista del Norte coastline.
Lorenzo highlights that with this project the City Council also seeks to ensure that the shell midden, in addition to being protected and “enjoying a protocol that regulates its maintenance”, becomes a space that can be visited “in order to learn about the functionality it had in the Canarian aboriginal culture” .
