The President of the Canary Islands Angel Victor Torresaffirmed yesterday in statements collected by Europa Press that the penalties for those who cause fires “must be increased”, to add that “at the moment you can already access the point” where the fire originated fire of Los Realejos (Tenerife), clarifying that “it seems intentional”. For this reason, after the question asked in the plenary session of the Parliament of the Canary Islands by the deputy of the Gomeran Socialist Group (ASG) Casimiro Curbelo On the approaches and improvements that the Archipelago will contribute to the national debate that has been opened on fire prevention and extinction devices, Torres stressed the need that whoever causes fires “must pay for it with all the outlaws.”
These statements come a day after it was confirmed that the fire that started in Los Campeches (Los Realejos) was “intentional.” This was confirmed on Monday afternoon by Isabel García, counselor for the Natural Environment of the Cabildo de Tenerife, in statements to Cadena SER in Tenerife. “The security forces and bodies already had defining elements that the fire was intentional, deliberate, which the environmental agents of our research group also told me,” said the member of the island government, who added in reference to The Campechesthe point of Los Realejos where the fire broke out: “We suspect that there is an arsonist in this area, a person who is dedicated to committing this type of crime.”
Torres wanted to highlight the “good work” that his Executive does, as, he said, “it has been demonstrated in the seven fires” that have occurred during the legislature so far and that have gone to level 2. He added that in the Canary Islands “there is no wait” for the fires to go to level 2 to activate the resources of other islands or the Military Emergency Unit (UME).
