The Defense Minister, Margaret Oakshas asked the regional governments this Monday, especially to Castilla y León, which do not haggle “neither in means nor in personnel” when it comes to preventing firessince that is your responsibility.
Robles has visited the Military Emergency Unit (UME) at the Torrejón Air Base, to learn about the evolution of the Army’s campaign against forest fires, which runs from June 15 to September 30.
The minister chaired a meeting together with Colonel Pedro Areinos, head of the UME General Staff, and Lieutenant General Luis Manuel Martínez Meijide, head of the UME, in which they connected electronically with commanders of the Second Battalion -based in Seville – and Battalion V -based in León-, which are respectively in charge of the fires in Tenerife and Castilla y León.
“We must invest and invest and that we do not remember the fires when they occur“, the minister remarked to the press at the end of the meeting, before pointing out that “it would be good” for all the communities and, above all Castile and Leonhave all the personnel and means necessary for this, since prevention is their responsibility.
The Minister of Defense has pointed out that misses that, sometimes, a greater investment effort is made to prevent fires from occurring and, where appropriate, from spreading rapidly, within the framework of a situation of “hard climate change” and in adverse weather conditions, with a heat that has not been experienced since 2012 and 2017, that the autonomies they know.
“We talk about people’s lives, and each one has their responsibilitiesand those who have prevention have to work so that prevention occurs”, the minister insisted.
Robles said that there is evidence that the fires have spread due to the situation of the vegetationemphasizing the need to prevent, and has highlighted that, once the flames are unleashed, “the EMU reaches the sites when it is activated, it cannot arrive when it wants and how it wants”.
In her remarks, the minister thanked all the UME staff and the more than 1,000 soldiers who work in firefighting for their work that develop in “very complicated” situations.
He has also taken the opportunity to express his solidarity and support with all the citizens of the areas affected by the wave of fires.
