A blow that changed a life

Ayoze Suárez is a neighbor of Gran Canaria and was summoned days ago to undergo a second forensic test for a serious assault outside a nightclub in Las Américas, in Arona. This is a new step in a case that occurred almost three years ago and that, according to the person affected, radically changed his life. Regardless of whether the trial is held and the alleged perpetrator is convicted or not, the consequences of that episode are indelible for Suárez. At 35 years old, he cannot work, he was declared totally incapable of work and has never been able to enjoy nightlife in a local again.

This citizen, accompanied by his brother-in-law, was spending his holidays in the South of Tenerife in August 2019. At dawn on the 17th, he was at the Papagayo Beach Club, in Verónicas. At 2:00 am, Ayoze was drunk and went to the bathroom. According to an employee of the nightclub that controlled that space, the man from Gran Canaria tried to skip the queue to access, shouting that he was a policeman. On the contrary, Ayoze affirms that he did not respect the order of entry and showed his disagreement.

The worker notified a colleague, who allegedly belonged to the local security team, who took Ayoze to the door of the lower part of the nightclub and, once outside, punched the victim in the face. , which was lying on the ground. The brother-in-law of the affected person observed that a National Police patrol passed by the place and asked for help.

in a pool of blood

The agents approached the wounded man, who was in the middle of a pool of blood. Even then, the affected person was bleeding profusely from the mouth. Officials explained at his appearance that Ayoze could barely speak due to injuries.

The police officers asked the 1-1-2 room to send an ambulance. However, at that time there was none available, so it was the agents themselves who transferred Ayoze to Hospiten Sur. A National Police service coordinator asked to speak with one of the nightclub managers to clarify what happened and identify the person who caused the injuries.

Shortly after, the aforementioned person went to speak with the police command and, next to him, the young man who identified himself as the alleged perpetrator of the attack appeared. This individual, who was later arrested, is Kilian BS, who was 27 years old at the time. The defendant, also a native of Gran Canaria, has been a fighter of MMA (mixed martial arts, in its name in English) and has several police and criminal records for various types of crimes.

The version offered by Kilian differs from that provided by the wounded man and his brother-in-law, who acted as a witness. According to said Papagayo worker, the person dedicated to the custody of the bathrooms warned him that an individual tried to jump the queue and that he and a friend tried to attack him. That’s why he asked for help and Kilian came. According to the accused, on the threshold of the door, Ayoze punched him in the stomach and he reacted immediately with another blow to the face. The judicial authority issued an order in which it clarifies that, even if it were so, the aggression was disproportionate towards Ayoze.

Surgical intervention

The victim had a double fracture in the jaw, considered serious. In fact, he was transferred to La Candelaria Hospital to undergo an urgent operation. In addition, the patient totally or partially lost seven teeth. Given the relevance of the injuries, the agents decided to locate the alleged security employee. At that time he was not in the premises, because his shift had already finished, so they called him several times on the phone, until they spoke with him. Kilian appeared at the South Tenerife Police Station, where he was informed that he was being held for serious injuries. The officials verified that the defendant did not have administrative authorization to work in security, which could constitute a crime of professional intrusion.

Ayoze Suárez will have sequels for life. So far she has had two surgeries, but she is still in pain and cannot speak properly. And she needs to go to a speech therapist and rehabilitation. He admits that at the time of the events he was drunk and asked the employees of the nightclub to speak with a manager because of what he was going through in the bathrooms. He denies that he hit Kilian when Kilian was carrying him outside. He remembers that, after being attacked, no other security guard in the premises helped him and that the only assistance he received was from the police. He still suffers from anxiety disorders, or nightmares at night.

Fear of going outside

“This completely changed my life,” he clarifies. “I’m afraid to go out on the street, afraid of people,” she says. Since October 2021, he has been monitored by the Clinical Psychology area of the Maternal and Child Hospital of Las Palmas, as well as by the Psychiatry unit. In a document from said center it is clarified that he presents “post-traumatic symptoms as a result of the aggression”, which manifests itself in “fear of going out alone, of staying in closed places, difficulty sleeping and nightmares, and a sad mood.” For some activities outside of his house, like going fishing or swimming, he always needs to be accompanied.

Until August 2019, he was working as a kitchen helper. She today has a permanent work incapacity, receives a pension and lives with her parents. To go out, she usually turns to a brother or some other relative. She believes that “Justice is very slow” in these procedures. In any case, her life has taken a 180 degree turn, where enjoying nightlife has no place.
