The City Hall of Santa Cruz de Tenerife announced this Thursday that it will increase the price of water by 0.68 euros per month, which has not been touched since 2012, to adjust them to the CPI.

This increase, which will be addressed at the next plenary session of the Consistory, will apply to 80% of subscribers, as reported at a press conference by the mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, and the Councilor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife.

As they have specified, the cost of desalination and transport of drinking water in Santa Cruz de Tenerife represents 60% of the total consumption in the city and has been multiplied by the increase in the price of electricity by 350% in one year, going from 3.6 million in 2021 to 12.5 in 2022.

The extra cost of 9 million is divided between an increase of more than 6 million in desalination and 3 in the distribution of the water generated.

The City hall details that the impact of the increase in the rate of the price of water, to cover the extra costs generated, would be 8.4 euros compared to the 1.37 euros bimonthly expected.

The mayor has stressed that it is his obligation to raise the rates to comply with the contract and that, despite this, Santa Cruz de Tenerife will have a lower rate than Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
