Ashotel and Asaga use organic waste from hotels to fertilize farms in the south of Tenerife

The hotel management Ashotel Y Asaga-Asaja Canary Islands have launched a pilot project that allows the use of organic waste from southern hotels to transform them into compost that will nourish ecological farms on the island. On the first day of this experience, almost a ton of organic and vegetable waste was collected, the result of selective collection in several hotel establishments in the region. Waste that will be converted in a few weeks into A+ compost (high quality) that will serve to nourish the soils of the farms of local agricultural producers who will mainly grow fruits and vegetables from which subsequently the hotel sector will be supplied.

It’s about the project Circular Tourist Communitiespromoted by Ashotel and Asaga-Asaja Canarias, which pursues the reduction of food waste and the recycling of organic matter from the selective collection at origin of these participating hotels and that promotes more sustainable tourism.

Ashotel underlines that the project aims to take advantage of the organic matter that is produced in hotels, stop burying it in landfills and regenerate soils and farms for better agricultural production and local supply, which ultimately means generating a circular economy. This week the first point-to-point collection took place in six associated hotel establishments: Bahía Príncipe Tenerife, Bahía del Duque, GF Gran Costa Adeje, RIU Palace Tenerife, Iberostar Bouganville Playa and Hovima Costa Adeje by the public company Clean Adejewhich transferred these remains to the Serviagroc ecological farm, in Guía de Isora, where high-quality biological compost will begin to be produced.

In this phase of the project, specific containers of different sizes have been provided to the participating companies, training has been given to the staff of the kitchen and restaurant areas for the correct separation of organic waste such as leftover fruit, vegetables, greens, eggshells, or coffee grounds.
