SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, July 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Canary Islands have registered maximum temperatures during the past dawn that in some points of the Archipelago have touched 40 degrees. In fact, since last midnight nine of the hottest places in the country are in the Islands, according to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
Since last Friday, the Canary Islands have been under the effects of a heat wave -the first of the summer- which has caused islands such as Gran Canaria to be on high alert due to temperatures that yesterday exceeded 40 degrees (Agüimes, 41.6 degrees ), while the rest of the islands remain on alert.
According to Aemet data, the hottest point in the country since last morning has been the municipality of Pájara, in Fuerteventura, where 39.5 degrees were recorded at 04:10. It is followed by El Matorral, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria), where at 07:00 the thermometer already marked 37 degrees.
The list of the ten hottest places in the country so far on Sunday is completed by the municipality of Agüimes, in Gran Canaria, with maximums of 35.4 degrees at 06:00; Gran Tarajal, in Tuineje (Fuerteventura), with 35.2 degrees at 08:00 hours; Fuerteventura Airport, with highs of 34.6 degrees at 06:00.
Also noteworthy are the 34.2 degrees registered at 02:40 in Tasarte, in the Gran Canaria municipality of La Aldesa de San Nicolás; 34 degrees at 5:30 am in Suerte Alta, in Agaete; 33.8 degrees at 02:30 a.m. in Lomo Pedro Alfonso, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, or the Gran Canaria Airport, with maximums of 33.7 degrees at 06:20 a.m.
The heat wave has also brought with it strong winds that have reached gusts of more than 70 km/h. In fact, since last midnight nine of the ten windiest places in the country are located in the Canary Islands. This is the case of Tejeda, in Gran Canaria, where gusts of 75 km/h were recorded last midnight, or San Cristóbal, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where gusts of 71 km/h were recorded at 06:00.
Lanzarote Airport also stands out, with gusts of 67 km/h at 07:10 am; El Hierro Airport (65 km/h at 04:20 hours); Teguise (61 km/h at 4:00 a.m.); Arure (59 km/h at 03:00 hours); La Dehesa, in El Pinar (57 km/h at 03:50 am) or Suerte Alta, in Agaete, with gusts of up to 56 km/h at 05:30 am.
