Peter Martinpresident of the Cabildo, and Jose Antonio Valbuenaregional councilor for Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning, analyze in a meeting the projects that are underway to promote the sustainable development of Tenerife. They link the effective management of European Next Generation funds with investment in restoring ecosystems, sustainable forest management, electric mobility or waste, among other actions.
The regional councilor underlines the prominent role that Tenerife will have in the global decarbonisation project proposed for the Canary Islands by 2040 and encourages the island Corporation to present initiatives to the three new subsidy lines that have been launched this week for the reserves of the biosphere, management and treatment of waste and supply.
Both reviewed in a work meeting held at the Insular Palace the matters related to the insular objectives linked to sustainable development and the implementation of strategic projects related to the ecological transition and climate change.
The status of processing of the main environmental initiatives of joint work with the Government and others of an insular scope, the projects that are promoted and their status, as well as the management of European Next Generation funds are some of the main issues discussed at this meeting.
Pedro Martín highlights the opportunity of the meeting to analyze in detail the work carried out in the management of the Next Generation funds linked to the Ecological Transition and Sustainable Development, both by the regional area and by the Cabildo.
«There are already six million direct euros confirmed for sustainable actions on the Island»
Six million euros.
Of the funds announced by the Ministry and launched by the Canarian Government, “more than six million have already been confirmed and will be transferred directly to the Cabildo de Tenerife,” explains and values Martín. He adds that they are intended for aspects such as the restoration of ecosystems and green infrastructure, the recovery and protection of vegetation on roadsides, sustainable forest management or different actions in the surroundings of the Teide National Park.
He also realized the subsidies already published and to which the Cabildo can opt together with the rest of the administrations, entities and individuals in terms of electric mobility, self-consumption and storage, thermal renewables, waste, supply and reduction of losses or biosphere reserves, among others.
For his part, Councilor Valbuena highlights that “Tenerife will be a fundamental piece in the common strategy that all Canarians share to decarbonize our economy in 2040.”
In this line, the regional official recalls the importance of projects such as the submarine cable that will link Tenerife and La Gomera, which is already under development, or the future hydraulic jump that is planned to be developed on the Island.
An opportunity.
“To all this we must add the opportunity that recovery funds represent to speed up the environmental deadlines established by all administrations,” says Valbuena. She does not forget to mention to the counselor what she supposes “to generate green employment opportunities and a volume of work among Tenerife companies around projects related to sustainability, the circular economy and renewable energies.”
“Tenerife is a key piece in the common strategy to decarbonize the economy in 2040”
Wind farms.
In addition, this work meeting addresses the adequacy of the wind farms of the Technological Institute of Renewable Energies (ITER), where the repowering process has begun, pending the environmental impact statement, to proceed with the replacement of 29 wind turbines for only five of new generation.
The island councilor for Natural Environment and Security Management, Isabel García, the councilor for Sustainable Development and Climate Change, Javier Rodríguez, and the director of Coordination and Support for the President, Aarón Afonso, participated in this meeting.
On behalf of the team of the Regional Council for Ecological Transition, the Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning, the Deputy Minister for Ecological Transition, Miguel Ángel Pérez, and the Deputy Minister for Territorial Planning, Leopoldo Díaz, were present along with the counselor; the regional director of Waters, Víctor Navarro; the general director of the Fight against Climate Change, José Domingo Fernández, and the general director of the Natural Environment Protection Agency, Ángel Fariña.
