The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and the councilors for Social Welfare and the Environment, Rubens Ascanio and José Luis Hernández, recently held a meeting with representatives of Fiare Banca Ética, a cooperative that finances and promotes economic activities with a positive social, in order to learn about their initiatives.
The mayor explained that the meeting discussed “different possibilities and proposals that could have a place in the city and that have been very interesting for reverting to the well-being of the community, which should be analyzed to see the feasibility of applying them from the Corporation”. “At La Laguna we are committed to social and solidarity models and we will carefully study the opportunities offered by alternative banking,” added Luis Yeray Gutiérrez.
Rubens Ascanio expressed himself in similar terms, since at the meeting “we were presented with actions that are already being carried out in other territories and that are related to the promotion of employment in groups with more difficulties in finding work and with a new aid model social”. “We will study them technically to see if they can be developed and implemented in the municipality, because they are very interesting for the area and this type of bank is particularly sensitive to positive initiatives for the community,” he added.
For his part, José Luis Hernández was grateful for the visit of the Fiare representation and stated that it is an entity “with which they want to” establish agreements to be able to develop the two motions approved in 2018 and 2019, in which the The City Council undertook to seek formulas for collaboration with ethical banking entities.” “This model is of great interest to this progressive government and we want the Administration to be an example for all citizens,” he added.
Among the agreements reached by the Municipal Plenary, points such as promoting agreements with ethical banks, cooperative banks and public banks stand out for the creation of municipal credit funds for the promotion of the social and solidarity economy, as well as for the financing of other sustainable social or environmental projects.
Likewise, the commitment to study the possibility of the local Corporation becoming a member of cooperative entities and including social and environmental criteria in the procedures for contracting services or financial products by the City Council is included.
